Students learn design terminology, the theory of visual language, process and methodology, structure and craft, and industry-standard technologies and programs. Our specialized courses cover design for print, brand identity, illustration, interaction and web design, UI & UX, package design, and special topics courses addressing contemporary design issues and problems.

The St. John’s University Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree in Graphic Design is a 132-credit program that provides aspiring graphic designers like you with the techniques, tools, and intellectual skills you need to develop your talents. You gain a full understanding of the theory and applications of graphic design principles, along with how to use color, photography, text, and composition to communicate powerfully and effectively in print and electronic media. Digital graphics and design is a discipline in which information is creatively conveyed visually. This program is for students who have an interest in graphic design using computer technology. Emphasis is on concept development and acquiring the technical skills for visual communication. Students will use their creativity, knowledge of design theory and technology skills to serve the graphic communication needs of a wide variety of businesses and industry. These include advertising and marketing, in-house design departments, publishing, web design firms, Internet companies and communication graphics. Employment opportunities will include graphic designer, digital imaging specialist, multimedia specialist and web graphics designer.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design is an applied arts program with a focus on the development of visual solutions to communication problems, and offers students guided hands-on experience in the creation of visual messages in print and electronic media. Degree candidates in the program are prepared for professional careers in the field and are challenged to research and evaluate the role contemporary design practices hold in our society.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is a broad, well-rounded liberal arts degree that is intended for students who desire an in-depth Studio Art or Graphic Design specialization with a more open educational program. The flexibility of this degree allows students to pursue Studio Art or Graphic Design alongside another field(s) of academic study if they choose to do so. Students have the possibility to select a minor or a group of related courses with the assistance of their faculty advisor.
 

The art + design major is a liberal arts curriculum structured to give the student an in-depth experience in the visual arts with an emphasis on studio production. It encourages students to develop creativity through discovery along with an ability to observe and analyze. Throughout their curriculum students: expand their ability to use verbal, written, and visual language effectively; to develop methodologies; to think logically and solve problems practically; to feel comfortable with new technologies and understand their impact on modern society. In addition, students learn to examine issues in an historical context and develop the ability to make ethical judgments.

As an art student at USM, you will explore your creative problem-solving ability through one-on-one instruction and mentoring from accomplished artists and faculty.

You can design the degree based on your interests, with three key concentration areas: Art Therapy, Graphic Design, and Studio Art.

This creative program blends hands-on practice and a thorough understanding of the skills and concepts used in graphic design and multimedia. You’ll emerge as an effective, cutting-edge designer for print and electronic media. You’ll team up with others and cultivate communal learning during some aspects of the program while focusing on individual skills in others.

You’ll take 24 credits of foundation courses for the first two years, then 30 credits of advanced courses your final two years. As part of the program, you will complete a 12-credit concentration in either graphic design or multimedia.

This program spans all forms of visual communication with a unique tie to emerging technologies. Students can choose from three emphasis areas, Graphic Design, Digital Design and Interaction Design. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design program at LTU provides students with a comprehensive experience in the dynamic field of graphic design, ranging from print media to the latest innovations in interactive and time-based media.

The Graphic Design concentration provides a learning environment that nurtures creative thinking and skill development. The curriculum is carefully assembled to fulfill the growing interest in graphic design from students in the Department of Art and beyond. Courses are designed to help students acquire the applicable skills and knowledge of design principles to gain professional proficiency in every aspect of the graphic design profession. The concentration will also prepare students for further study at the graduate level and to meet the demands of the workforce.

The curriculum in graphic design requires 122 credit hours and prepares the student for entrance into the professional practice of design visual communications. Studio work addresses graphic design fundamentals (typography and image making), design history and contemporary practices, research methods, user experience, and social responsibility. Students engage with complex problems and are asked to identify opportunities where design can intervene. In addition, students have the opportunity to develop their personal interests by taking advantage of a highly interdisciplinary selection of elective courses offered by the School of Art + Design, including photography, video, traditional printmaking, sustainability, advanced interaction design, and the design of Ninth Letter, a nationally-distributed and award-winning literary arts journal.
