You can make a difference for the next generation with a Carlow University master’s degree in Early Childhood Supervision. The program prepares early childhood leaders for positions in child care centers and elementary programs serving children from birth through sixth grade. Most principals are not prepared for Pre-K through kindergarten and early elementary leadership, which is this program’s focus.

Carlow will train you to become an effective, ethical agent of systemic change who can tackle implicit bias, racism and equity issues in the early childhood field, and connect you with like-minded educators.

The undergraduate inclusive early childhood education major and licensure program is designed to prepare resilient, culturally responsive educators who are advocates for children and youth in inclusive public education settings.  

Academic experiences in the major, including coursework and field experiences, assist students as they gain knowledge and understanding of early childhood inclusion (Birth-3rd grade) and practices that promote access, participation, and support for young children and their families.  Students completing the four-year licensure program are prepared to serve as teachers of students birth through 3rd grade with and without exceptionalities (Birth- age 5 special education and PK-3rd grade general education). 

The Adolescence Education unit of the Department of Teaching & Learning offers instruction leading to New York State initial and professional certification to teach the following subjects in Grades 7-12: English, Mathematics, the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics), and Social Studies. Certificates for teaching in New York State are automatically accepted for teaching in many other states.

In addition, a new minor in Adolescence Education will be available in fall 2021. Though the minor does not lead to eligibility for a New York State teacher certificate, it may be of interest to students seeking an introduction to the field of secondary education. Furthermore, for students pursuing a BA in Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Mathematics, the Adolescence Education minor is designed to facilitate completion of two degrees in five years: the undergraduate BA and the graduate MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching). Today teachers must be prepared to work with students with diverse needs and abilities. The inclusion movement mandates placing special education students in general education classrooms, regardless of their disability. This mandate changes special education from a pull-out to a pull-in program. According to Dr. Sally Smith, Director of the Lab School in Washington, DC, inclusion will make it necessary for the general education and special education teachers to co-teach. They will plan lessons and teach together and share responsibilities for assessing a student’s mastery of skills and socialization.

The Early Childhood Education major at EIU emphasizes educational practices in birth through second grade.

Students at the University of Maine wishing to transfer to this major should have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 for Early Childhood Education concentration or a 2.5 cumulative GPA for all other concentrations.  Students looking for Individual and Family Studies concentration not meeting these minimum GPAs should submit an application consisting of a resume, and an essay identifying their professional goals.  A faculty committee will review applications. Application packets should be submitted to 118 Merrill Hall.  All other students need to apply through the Admissions Office.

Upon complete of the program, the student will meet current State of Illinois standards for Early Childhood Education (ECED) licensure.

The student will:

• Develop skills, insights and attitudes crucial to effective teaching of young children
• Develop knowledge of the education of young children from birth to eight years of age
• Become aware of Early Childhood education program models and designs
• Develop necessary pedagogical competencies for teaching young children
• Utilize current research and exposure to classroom practices to understand how young children develop and learn
• Become familiar with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), its principles, guidelines and ethics for working with young children.

Middle school teachers (grades 5-9)are given the freedom to concentrate on specific subjects near and dear to their hearts. A Bachelor of Science in Education Degree, Middle School Education major allows you to become certified in single or dual areas. On top of core and department requirements, additional hours may be added on four single subject areas: Math, Communication Arts (English), Social Studies or Science.

• The Missouri Southern Teacher Education candidate understands the central concepts, structures, and tools of inquiry of the discipline(s) and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful and engaging for all students.
• The Missouri Southern Teacher Education candidate understands how students learn, develop and differ in their approaches to learning. The teacher provides learning opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners and support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.
• The Missouri Southern Teacher Education candidate recognizes the importance of long‐range planning and curriculum development. The teacher develops, implements, and evaluates curriculum based upon standards and student needs.
• The Missouri Southern Teacher Education candidate uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students’ critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills including instructional resources.
• The MSSU Teacher Education candidate uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages active engagement in learning, positive social interaction, and self‐motivation.
• The MSSU Teacher Education candidate models effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques with students and parents to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
• The MSSU Teacher Education candidate understands and uses formative and summative assessment strategies to assess the learner’s progress, uses assessment data to plan ongoing instruction, monitors the performance of each student, and devises instruction to enable students to grow and develop.

•  You may want to sponsor extra-curricular activities or accompany students to subject-area competitions on the regional, state and national levels.

Middle level teacher education is a major in which university students learn to teach students in grades four through eight in specific subject areas.

Concentrations are English/language arts and reading, mathematics, science and social studies. Students are prepared for state licensure exams, which they must pass to earn teaching positions in public schools.   

The elementary years are about more than classroom instruction. Pursue this program to learn about elements across society that impact elementary schooling and elementary aged children.

The MEd in School Counseling program is designed to prepare students to function as K–12 licensed professional school counselors. This program is approved by the New Hampshire Department of Education and leads to New Hampshire licensure in school counseling. PSU’s school counseling program is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). It is the only school counseling program in New Hampshire to hold this prestigious distinction.

This professional school counseling preparation program emphasizes personal and interpersonal growth in addition to academic excellence. The program aims to support the development of school counseling students’ attitudes, knowledge, and skills that are essential to promoting the social, emotional, academic, and career development of all children. As part of this developmental process, school counseling students engage in several pre-practicum experiences that progressively assist students in connecting theory with practice. For example, pre-practicum experiences are integrated into selected professional courses (Foundations of School Counseling [CO 5030] and Career Counseling and Development [CO 5230]) and include brief experiences in schools or other settings. Upon successful completion of core courses and pre-requisite specialty courses, students begin their field-based experiences of practicum and internship. During these experiences, students are placed in the schools to allow them the opportunity to engage in the full range of activities that are associated with the role of the school counselor. While completing their practicum and internship experiences, students must be able to attend weekly seminars in Plymouth.

The College of Education offers an undergraduate major in Early Childhood Education that prepares future teachers for teaching children birth through age eight and offers two study track options. Students successfully completing the degree program in either Option 1 (licensure) or 2 (non-licensure) obtain a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Students in Option 1 earn a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a teaching license. Students in Option 2 earn a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education but are not able to apply for a teaching license. All students in this program (Option 1 and Option 2) must complete 49-52 hours in General Education coursework, 60 hours in Professional Education coursework, and 18 hours in Teacher Specialization coursework (ESL) to meet the 120 minimum credit hours for graduation. Both options require over 200 hours of clinical experience in the field.

The middle childhood period (age nine to 14 and grade four to nine) lays the foundation to help students become good citizens and lifelong learners as well as healthy, caring, ethical and intellectually reflective individuals. Therefore, the Lourdes University Department of Education has designed the Bachelor of Arts in Middle Childhood Education program to be developmentally responsive to the diverse and unique needs of young learners.

As a middle childhood education major, you can choose to specialize in two of the following concentrations:

• Mathematics
• Language arts
• Social studies
• Science

Teachers of middle childhood need specific training in facilitating the growth and development of the whole child in the domains of physical, cognitive, language, creative, social and affective development. Integrated into the Lourdes teacher preparatory methodology are conceptual fundamentals of child development theory, curriculum, development, knowledge of environmental designs, classroom management, multicultural education, instructional technology, assessment and various effective teaching practices. All of these practices are developmentally appropriate for the young adolescents and professionals you will work with.

Focused on culturally competent school counseling and social justice, the School Counseling, M.S. helps you become a compassionate, effective advocate for the academic, social, and emotional success of pre-K–12 students.

You’ll gain a broad foundation on prevalent topics in school counseling today, including leadership, group counseling, working with special needs students, college counseling, and school violence prevention. You’ll also acquire the critical experience you need through a practicum and internships under the mentorship of a tenured school counselor in a pre-K–12 school setting.

We also offer a Bilingual Extension, which can be completed simultaneously with your school counseling degree. The extension includes a minimum of six additional credits, as well as bilingual practicum experience to prepare you to work specifically with bilingual/ELL students and their families. NYSED certification will require documented proficiency in the target language by independently passing the New York State Bilingual Assessment (BEA).

You can complete your degree and launch your new career path in two years full-time or three years on a part-time basis.

This concentration within the Master of Arts in Teaching Program is designed for individuals who have completed an appropriate baccalaureate degree in the liberal arts. Students who complete the certification part of this program will be eligible for Elementary (K-6) Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing endorsement on a New Jersey Instructional License. Successful completion of this program enables individuals to become effective educators by meeting the wider ranging needs of learners with vastly different experiences, language backgrounds, economic statuses, and cultures. The program prepares candidates to incorporate technology into their classroom activities, respond to varied learning styles, and keep pace with education trends and demands.

The University of Mount Union’s Bachelor of Arts degree in middle childhood education degree and license prepares students to work with grades 4-9, with a choice of focus in language arts, science, social studies and mathematics. Middle childhood majors choose two of the four areas of emphasis in addition to a minor area of study. Similar to other education majors, middle childhood students begin field experience in the spring of freshman year with placements in a variety of school and agency settings.
