Students completing a degree in Agricultural Economics must choose a concentration from three choices: Applied Agricultural Economics, Commodity Marketing, and Quantitative Analysis. The Applied Agricultural Economics concentration offers students a great deal of flexibility with 18 Agricultural Economics electives allowing the student to design their focus within the department and developing a strong foundation in economic theory.

As a JMU economics major, you’ll gain a solid foundation of economic theory and policy that can lead to a wide variety of career options, including financial analysis and trading, consumer advocacy, economic analysis, communications and public administration. Our curriculum will develop your skills in critical thinking, research, writing and analysis. We emphasize a commitment to lifelong learning, which is critical in an ever-changing global economy.

The Agricultural and Applied Economics (AAE) major provides students with a strong base in economics and how it is applied to real-world situations.  Students develop and use economic data and models to analyze and understand a wide range of issues—including environmental problems, world hunger, energy and climate change, business economics and finance, economic development, globalization and trade, biotechnology, land-use management, and community development. Course subjects include economics, environmental economics, managerial economics, financial management, commodities and futures markets, the global economy, development in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, cooperatives, international trade, pollution, and regulation. Students acquire the necessary skills to pursue a rewarding career in consulting, government, business, or international organizations, or a graduate degree in economics, public policy, business or law.

The Department of Economics offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Art or a Bachelor of Science in Economics. It is designed to prepare students for careers in private and public sectors, non-profit organizations, and for graduate work in economics and business administration.

In addition to a broad General Economics track, students may complete prescribed clusters of upper-division elective courses to concentrate their studies in Business Economics or International Economics tracks.  Students who intend to pursue graduate study in economics are advised to complete additional courses in mathematics.

The Social Studies (non-teaching) program is designed for students to study from a wide variety of social science areas (i.e., anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, gender and women's studies, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology). This interdisciplinary approach is offered, and provides the student an opportunity to create a program to meet her or his personal academic needs. 

Economic forces rule the world around us. Our complex economic system influences consumers, workers, businesses and governments. It permeates all aspects of our lives and choices we make.

Economists study those choices. They explain why economic situations occur, how markets work and how government policy influences the economy. By enhancing your skills with economics, you'll discover the many career options available to you.

Graduates might pursue investment banking or work as an actuary, budget analyst or trade specialist. A concentration in economics also serves as a firm foundation for graduate studies in business, public administration or international studies. It is also one of the best pre-law options for students.

The economics program at WOU is all about the big picture. You’ll be exposed to the full range of application of economic theory including international trade, management decision-making, financial markets, labor markets and e-commence. Many economics majors complete an internship or practicum as part of their electives, so you’ll get a chance to learn practical skills in the field that will equip you for a wide range of employment options after graduation.

The Economics major at Eastern is designed to be flexible, allowing a student to tailor the degree to her or his specific interests and career aspirations, and the Economics major can be combined easily with any minor.

The Bachelor degree in economics at WSB is designed to give graduates the analytic and quantitative skills to be effective business decision makers as well as to understand basic economic theory and application that can be useful should they choose to continue graduate studies in economics or related disciplines. Historically, graduates with economics degrees who go on to legal studies, an MBA, or other related professional degrees do significantly better than students from other disciplines. Students with language skills may take an appropriate range of academic courses and obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree.

This major prepares you for a variety of opportunities in the world of economics. You'll learn how to analyze markets using microeconomic theory and gain an understanding of what determines unemployment and inflation by studying macroeconomic theory. You will develop data analysis skills by taking coursework in business statistics and conducting your own research project in the program’s capstone course. Elective courses give you the opportunity to explore how economics can be used to analyze environmental policy, tax policy, international trade, international financial markets, the banking system, health care policy, or the economic systems of other countries. Many students enhance their career goals by double-majoring in economics and another discipline such as political science or mathematics.

The skills you learn as an economics major are widely applicable and prepare you to help businesses and government agencies make important decisions. In the private sector large firms hire economists to help plan corporate strategy; utility and manufacturing companies hire economists to forecast demand for their products; and firms in the financial sector to serve as financial analysts, financial consultants, and risk analysts. You can explore these career options and gain valuable experience through economics internships. 

The Department of Economics offers programs designed to improve the understanding of important economic problems and to provide the tools needed for the critical analysis of these problems and for dealing with them in practice.

On the undergraduate level, the department provides both for those who want to become professional economists and for those interested in a specialty related to economics, such as business, law, government, history, health care management, or environmental engineering. Still other students are simply interested in improving their understanding of society or making informed assessments of economic policies as citizens or making wise decisions about personal finances.

On the graduate level, the department provides advanced training for students preparing for careers as professional economists. The program encompasses such fields as macroeconomics, microeconomic theory, econometrics, labor economics, international economics, industrial organization, economic development, and finance, with an emphasis on the application of economic theory and quantitative methods. Because of the small number of graduate students admitted, they can work closely with faculty in graduate courses and seminars, and have easy and informal access to faculty members. Aside from traditional coursework, research, and special lectures, the department holds three weekly seminars to encourage collaboration and communication in different areas of economics. The seminars attract top scholars from throughout the world to discuss their work and also provide a forum for faculty and graduate students to present their recent research. The department also hosts two annual lecture series, the Johns Hopkins Distinguished Lectures in Economics and the Newcomb Lectures that invite reputed economists or scholars in related fields as guest speakers.

Paul Samuelson, known as the Father of Modern Economics, describes economics as the “study of how societies use scarce resources to produce valuable commodities and distribute them among different people."

The department of economics is dedicated to providing an interesting, student centered educational experience in economics by encouraging students to use economic reasoning, curiosity and critical thinking to investigate and discuss current economic problems and issues of the day.

Like the bachelor of arts, a bachelor of science in economics provides students with the qualitative skills they need to critically analyze questions faced by policy makers and firms. However, unlike the BA it places a greater emphasis on developing students’ quantitative skills. Students are required to take a combination of economics, econometrics and math courses as well as complete a research project to achieve the BS.

Southern Utah University’s Economics Program provides students with high quality educational opportunities and excellent preparation for professional careers or graduate school. Highly effective teaching—focused on student learning—is the hallmark of the program. The faculty also strives to make meaningful intellectual contributions, by conducting and disseminating the results of research and related scholarly activities, and to provide service to the university, the economics profession and society. Economics is an unusual major that is both liberal arts, since it’s a social science, and professional, since it’s a fundamental discipline for business. Because it emphasizes the development of thinking and problem-solving skills, economics prepares graduates for a wide variety of careers and a changing environment.

The undergraduate Economics program is designed to prepare students as competent economists ready for successful careers in business or government, graduate school in economics or professional school studying business or law. As a student in this program, you’ll take a range of courses including macroeconomics, microeconomics, public speaking, international trade and more.

Because the economics program is relatively small, economics students often work through their program of study in "cohorts" which makes the classroom atmosphere informal and collegial. Upper-level economics courses usually have fewer than 25 students which help to facilitate student-professor interaction.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in economics at the University of Mount Union covers economic principles including micro, macro, managerial, and global economics. As an economics major, students explore topics such as financial accounting and quantitative methods while gaining valuable skills for a career in the field. The economics major combines practical preparation with a liberal arts foundation, which guides students as they seek solutions for a broad spectrum of challenges.

Economics majors will acquire an overall understanding of business organizations and develop a deeper grasp of the intricacies involved with international operation. Students explore the impact of politics, different cultures, and international diplomacy on the opportunities available to the corporations of the world. 

Economics is the study of creation, consumption, and transfer of wealth. The major includes two major areas: microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics focuses on how individuals and firms produce and consume goods and services. Macroeconomics is concerned with mass economic progress and international trade. As a student in Economics, you’ll learn about markets and how capital moves, is gained and lost, and transfers among individuals. You’ll gain an understanding of the numbers and theories behind economics. With this understanding, you can use quantitative skills like calculus and statistics to solve economic issues.

Upon completing the BA Degree with a major in Managerial Economics and Organizational Sciences, students will be able to:

1. Evaluate critically the impact of organizational practices, markets, public policies and institutions, and politics on business outcomes.
2. Understand management as an interdisciplinary field and demonstrate the ability to use critical thinking to synthesize key knowledge, theories, and research across different disciplines. 
3. Develop quantitative/statistical analysis and research skills in order to perform evidence-based analysis of business problems and proposals.
4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate analysis and research findings in written and oral formats.
