This program is geared for such functional diversity.

Many university graduates who are hired by entrepreneurial ventures eventually become entrepreneurs themselves. This career track is common in the entrepreneurial sector. It is a reliable stepping-stone approach to launching one’s own entrepreneurial venture. Our program will prepare students for this stepping-stone career track with an appropriate balance of academic and practical exposure via the city’s booming renaissance in entrepreneurial activity and socioeconomic development with outreach-based educational experiences and direct exposure to local entrepreneurs.

Some of our entrepreneurship students may have a strong interest in pursuing graduate work that may eventually culminate in a tenure-track faculty position. Our entrepreneurship program at UAB has a faculty team including well-trained and research-active professors who are qualified to serve UAB students interested in academic career tracks.

Every individual, business and organization need to secure and effectively allocate financial resources in order to survive and grow. Our finance curriculum uses both theory and best practices to teach you how to best understand and solve the financial operating and investment problems businesses face. A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Finance degree at UAB prepares you for a career in Investments, Real Estate, Banking, Corporate Finance, Data Analytics, or Insurance, among many others. 

A Bachelor of  Science (B.S) in Human Resource (HR) Management degree is ideal for people who like big picture thinking, can understand how processes work, and have a passion for problem-solving that creates value for the organization. Organizations need managers with comprehensive knowledge of today’s most important issues in human resources and employment relations, including employment law, compensation, recruiting/staffing, training, workplace diversity, and strategic planning. Today’s business environment requires graduates who can effectively evaluate and make decisions, lead employees, and manage resources.

The human resource management major prepares students for a career in HR that is focused on contributing strategically and functionally to attract, manage and retain talent that achieves organizational goals. The UAB MBA is designed to provide competency in management and to acquaint the student with all aspects of business activity.  In order to deal effectively with increasingly complex and ambiguous problems of business and organizations, managers require training in sophisticated analytical techniques, appreciation for the behavioral facets of management, as well as an ability to anticipate and adapt to changes in an industrial environment. The program stresses critical thinking and is decision oriented, focusing on key aspects of business administration.

The MBA program is suitable not only for students with baccalaureate degrees in business but also for those who have degrees in engineering, the sciences, or liberal arts.

UAB’s MBA program offers an online MBA, and an on-campus program where students may take a combination of face-to-face and online classes. Students may choose to follow either a one or two-year-plan of study to guarantee graduation with a specified time-frame, or to pursue the degree at their own pace. Students have 5 years from term of entry to complete degree requirements.

Concentrations are available in finance, management information systems, marketing, and health services, and entrepreneurship. Dual Degree options available include MD/MBA, DMD/MBA, OD/MBA, MPH/MBA, MSHA/MBA, and ASEM/MBA and require applicants to apply and be accepted to both degree programs.

This Bachelor of Science (B.S) in Information Systems (IS) degree is ideally suited for those who enjoy working with technology and with people.  Information Systems are the backbone of modern organizations. With today’s speed of innovation, organizations need help keeping up with emerging technologies and understanding how different applications can be leveraged to accomplish enterprise objectives. The amount of information generated each day can be overwhelming. Organizations need the best technological solutions to make sense of the data, and individuals who know how to develop them are in high demand, unlike some other computer related fields. Information Systems requires a blend of technical expertise and business savvy. The information systems major provides a solid foundation in business information systems and business knowledge with a well-rounded business curriculum as well as specialized courses in information systems that deliver a broad understanding of how to leverage technology to achieve business goals.

IS graduates will be uniquely qualified to serve as liaisons between technical teams and management, and to facilitate collaborative approaches to solve business problems.

The Master of Science in Cyber-Security (MSSec) program is an interdisciplinary professional/practice graduate program intended to develop skills — familiarity with industry practices, innovative methods, critical thinking, and problem solving — crucial for competitiveness and success in the areas of computer forensics, information security management, and forensic accounting.

This program is intended to increase the pipeline of prospective, high-quality, entry- and advanced level employees involved with protecting physical and virtual systems — systems that are vital to the US and whose incapacitation or destruction would have a debilitating effect on national security and the nation’s economic system. The program also provides current employees in the public and private sectors an opportunity to obtain advanced-level, high-quality training in the core areas of computer forensics, information security management, and forensic accounting, to facilitate career advancement.

MS Cyber-Security involves faculty from the Departments of Computer Science and Criminal Justice (College of Arts and Sciences) and the Departments of Management, Information Systems Quantitative Methods, and Accounting & Finance (School of Business).

People with disabilities count on breakthrough innovations created by biomedical engineers to lead their daily activities. When you have an education that combines both life sciences and engineering, you can help develop better walkers, wheelchair accessories, and other assistive technologies that change lives.

In fact, biomedical engineers design all sorts of tools and products that are critical to the medical profession. From surgical instruments to implants and much more, your job description runs the gamut. That's why we offer three concentrations in our program. If you choose to study tissue engineering, you'll learn about combining cells and molecules into functional tissues, like artificial skin and cartilage. Or you can choose to focus on biomaterials and study building artificial organs and learn how medical devices interact with the human body. Concentrate on biomechanics, and you'll explore implantable device design, how cells respond to outside forces, and more. You'll also be able to add the UABTeach program onto your coursework, earning a certification to teach biology or general science. You'll finish with a senior capstone design experience, where you'll work with students from different majors solving real-world engineering problems.

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers a broad-based major in civil engineering. The program covers:

• mechanics and structures,
• soils,
• surveying,
• transportation,
• water resources,
• environmental engineering, and
• construction engineering management.

Computer applications are emphasized in all areas.

You will take foundation courses in pre-engineering, mathematics, calculus-based physics, chemistry, humanities, and social sciences. You will also take fundamental engineering coursework, advanced courses, and electrical engineering elective courses. During your studies you will participate in classroom discussions and gain hands-on experience with laboratory and research activities. During your senior year, the capstone design experience will challenge you to demonstrate your ability to work in teams to design, develop, and test solutions to engineering problems.

The program requires 128 credit hours to complete. You will find required courses, course descriptions, and a four-year plan-of-study in the UAB Undergraduate Catalog.

A bachelor’s degree in engineering design can provide students with the ability to synthesize engineering, business, and societal priorities. Graduates will have the essential skills they need to work in diverse industries, as well as a thorough understanding of the following:

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers undergraduate students a major in materials science and engineering, covering a wide spectrum of the materials world, with concentrations in biomaterials, metallurgy, and polymer matrix composites.

Besides classroom learning, our students are trained with technical skills through laboratory classes, research experiences in laboratories led by faculty, and internships and co-ops in industry. Students develop their professional skill by active engagement with the UAB student chapters of various professional societies and participating in outreach activities. After graduation, our students either start professional careers or pursue graduate studies.

The Mechanical Engineering (ME) undergraduate program at UAB features small class sizes and the opportunity for one-on-one interactions between faculty members and students. The curriculum is designed to get students proficient in mechanical engineering science, with a mixture of mostly theoretical and mostly lab-based courses that explore all facets of mechanical engineering applications. During the senior year, a comprehensive design experience allows students to project, build, and test a mechanical device, while learning to work in groups and to overcome "real-life" obstacles (cost overruns, fabrication schedule delays, etc.).

Students entering the MSBME program normally have earned a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, another engineering discipline, or a closely-related field. Students with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences, life sciences, or mathematics will also be considered for admission; however, such students must demonstrate preparation for the BME graduate curriculum.

Admission to the MS program is competitive. Successful applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5 (on a 4-point scale). However, applications are reviewed holistically and applicants with lower grades may be admitted based on factors such as strong GRE scores, research experience, or professional experience.

A master of science in civil engineering equips engineers to advance in various industrial or academic career fields that emphasize high-level and collaborative research. An M.S. in civil engineering can serve as a step toward a Ph.D. in engineering, or it can provide the experience and credentials needed to increase competiveness in the job market. The program can be completed in as few as two years, though the typical student takes two courses per term for five semesters.

The BA in African American Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining African life and culture, both on the African continent and the diaspora. As a student, you will learn about the African and African American experience from different perspectives including English, history, political science, sociology, and public health.

The Bioinformatics program at UAB is the first of its kind in Alabama. It is designed to provide a thorough understanding of bioinformatics, but also give you a background in genetics, molecular biology, computer science, chemistry, and mathematics.

Bioinformatics at UAB is an interdisciplinary program. Students will be able to participate in research with faculty from departments across the university, including:
