Bowie State is the first historically black college or university in Maryland to host a small business incubator and one of only a few in the country to offer an academic program in entrepreneurship. The Advertising Design concentration addresses the current demand and industry needs for artists, designers and problem solvers. The concentration also focuses primarily on print, graphic and web design, and will include additional coursework in advertising design, business and marketing, and provide art students an overview of the business of art/design.

Students are empowered to continue their success and studies at the graduate level and beyond. Students will focus primarily on illustration and print design; and the integration of web design, multimedia and new media. Thus making graduates in this area more marketable and in demand. The Advertising Design concentration prepares students for careers in graphic design, visual communication, advertising and print and web-based industry. 

Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary field that links biology, computer science, chemistry, and mathematics to forge important advances in the biomedical field. The Bioinformatics program will train graduates with a comprehensive skill set in applied science for future STEM careers. This training will enable students to communicate fluently with experts across these disciplines and have the skills necessary to apply computing tools to address contemporary biology and medicine problems. The Bioinformatics Program will enhance undergraduate’s professional opportunities to pursue careers in academia, national labs, pharmaceutical, medical, or biotechnology sectors.

The Biology Program focus is on the study of life from an environmental, organismal, cellular, and molecular levels.  Using modern biological research techniques, students will develop skills required to address relevant questions in science and society. Through innovative curriculum, students will receive extensive knowledge, skills and abilities to pursue postgraduate education and/or a variety of careers through hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory experiences. 

Applied Mathematics is the application of classical and modern mathematical techniques to solve practical problems in science, engineering, and business. At the heart of an education in Applied Mathematics is the development of analytical reasoning and its application to practical problems. The applied mathematician develops and analyzes mathematical models of physical phenomena and collects/interprets data in order to identify relationships, patterns, and the likely impact of modifying one or more parameters. Several of the courses in this program illustrate exactly how mathematics is used in real applications such as predicting the evolution and behavior of physical phenomena. Applied mathematicians have the skills needed to obtain employment in fields as diverse as aerospace, oil exploration, manufacturing, geology, actuarial science, chemistry, communications, and computing. Health sciences, Applied sciences, and Engineering offer additional prospects to Applied mathematicians in the academic, business, industrial, and government sectors. The basic skills required to succeed in any of these fields are acquired in the Applied and Computational Mathematics Program. This program also provides a strong foundation for graduate school.

Aspiring teachers work in tandem with the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Teaching, Learning and Professional Development to complete the secondary mathematics education concentration. In addition to course requirements, students must pass the appropriate state-approved teacher competency exams (Praxis I and Praxis II).

The Chemistry Program is designed to provide students with a broad knowledge of the major concepts, theoretical principles, and experimental findings of Chemistry. Students will learn to apply chemical concepts to everyday life and to their career of choice.  Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared for postgraduate education or employment in government and industry.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Program is for students whose primary interest is in software development.  Students learn to build software for complex systems, and familiarize themselves with the latest software development trends.  Bowie State University has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. This means that students have an option to choose their elective courses in Cybersecurity, thereby earning a Certificate of Completion stating that all mandatory knowledge unit requirements have been satisfied in Cyber Defense Education.

Gain skills in cloud computing, data management and infrastructure management. Students in this track use hardware and software to build networks that enable connectivity, communication, operations and management.

Students use technical skills to predict and describe prescriptive modeling to support decision-making. In addition, students will implement and design the architectural structure of the Oracle Database Management System.
