Our Mathematics and Computer Science degrees are mathematical courses orientated towards computing science.

Taught jointly by the Departments of Computing and Mathematics, they provide a firm foundation in mathematics, particularly in pure mathematics, numerical analysis and statistics. They also cover all the essentials of computer science, with an emphasis on developing software, as well as more theoretical topics.

This makes the courses particularly suited to mathematically-able students with interests in both subjects.

The DPhil offered by the CDT provides graduates with the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge, understanding and expertise in autonomous intelligent systems. 

The programme provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art view of autonomous intelligent systems, combining theoretical foundations, systems research, academic training and industry-initiated projects and thus mixing both practical and theoretical aspects of intelligent machines and systems.

Computer science concerns the understanding, designing, implementing and using computing systems. These can range in scale, and complexity, from the tiny components of a single processor to the globe-spanning internet.

The core concepts of computing come from mathematics, logic and engineering, such as:

• what it means to compute
• what can or cannot be computed
• how computers work

Computer Science demands and develops a challenging mix of skills and abilities. These include a deep understanding of the technology, creativity and imagination, logic and attention to detail, strong analytic and design skills combined with excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

All our degrees courses have strong practical and theoretical foundations. Our courses have a similar foundation in the beginning, making it possible to transfer between courses.

Our programme will give you practical skills in software development and interface design, underpinned by a strong grasp of the fundamental principles of IT. We cover programming, software engineering, computer and network design and the theory of computing, as well as multimedia, usability and interaction.

You’ll gain practical experience of building computer systems in progressively more demanding contexts, and develop a deep understanding of how to solve problems using modelling and abstraction techniques. With a flexible curriculum, you’re encouraged to pursue your own interests.

In the final year, you’ll design an individual project based on your own interests and linked to research areas in the School, such as security, big data, computer gaming, interaction design, machine learning, pervasive computing, theoretical computer science, social network analysis or digital audio.

You will learn about the design and development of dependable software systems.

Explore different aspects of computing science – such as games design, bioinformatics, and security – in your first two years.

Spend a year on an accredited, paid industrial placement between Stages 2 and 3.

Study specialist modules in Stage 3 – such as cryptographies and software verification technology – to develop skills and knowledge for your chosen career.

This five-year MEng course will develop your engineering skills in computer software and hardware. The key difference between this and a computer science degree is the focus on engineering systems: electromechanical design, robotics and computer programming for embedded systems. You'll also carry out an industrial placement to enhance your employability.

Modules are informed by our world-leading research and designed with input from our industry partners, so you'll have the best start for your career. You'll use industry-standard equipment and learn about state-of-the-art applications in infrastructure, medicine and aviation.

Our courses share a common first year. You'll study subjects that are fundamental to computer systems such as mathematics, computing, control, electronics, software and embedded systems.

Created with input from industry, our BEng and MEng in Computer and Internet Engineering are developing the next generation of engineers for the internet age.

Throughout your studies, you’ll complete integrated training in communications (both hardware and software), media and content delivery, and security and machine learning.

Our aim is to develop engineers with a solid grounding in electronics and the specialist skills needed to work at the forefront of mobile and internet technology. After a year covering important concepts in programming and electronics, you’ll study advanced modules in topics such as mobile communications, digital signal processing and artificial intelligence.

You can apply to study for a BEng or an MEng. The MEng builds on the BEng with a masters year and is a direct route to a masters qualification. Depending on your progress, you may have the option to switch to a BEng or MEng during your studies.

On this course, you'll learn the principles and practice of systems administration and management – including system and network design, analysis, specification, efficiency and security.

You'll plan and produce an individual project, and we'll provide the expertise and support so you can develop your professional practice. So once you graduate, you'll have all the tools you need for a career in computer network administration.

You can start this course in October/September or February/January (full time only in February/January).
