The institution was founded in 1884 as the Tri-State Normal College by residents of Angola, Indiana and the Commerce Building was the first facility of the institution. The Administration Building no longer existed in 1887 while the School of Engineering opened in 1902. The name of the institution became Tri-State College in 1906 while it gained university status in 1975, becoming the Tri-State University. A massive expansion drive took place in the 1970s and 1980s while the eventual name became Trine University in 2008, honouring trustees Sheri and Dr Ralph Trine. 

Trine University enrolled 4,646 students in the Fall of 2020. 99.4% of the 2019 class obtained employment within six months of graduating. The ratio of students to faculty stands at 17:1. The institution has disbursed USD 35,809 (INR 26.86 lakh approximately) to students with 98% getting financial support of some sort. The university sprawls over 450 acres with USD176 million+ (INR 1,356 crore approximately) in major improvements at the beginning of the year 2000.
