Marriage and Family Therapy (SMFT) is a specialization in Applied Human Development and Family Sciences M.S. program. The specialization prepares you for a career as a licensed couple and family therapist. The intensive 21-month (5 semester) program is a blend of academic coursework in systemic theory and therapeutic techniques along with hands-on clinical training. Graduates gain 500 hours of supervised clinical experience as a therapist. The SMFT program is accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Marriage and Family Education (COAMFTE).

The Master of Science in Human Services Program Administration graduate program supports students? learning through human services focused content, an applied focus, experiential learning opportunities, and faculty mentoring. Coursework addresses public policy, grant-writing, current global issues, program planning and assessment, leadership in diverse family and cultural settings, family financial resource management, resilience in individuals and families across the lifespan, and family life education programming in communities.

The Master of Arts in Child Development is a 35-39-unit, evening program designed to provide students with an in-depth background in child growth and development. This program is targeted to students wishing to continue their studies at the graduate level in child development, for those currently in careers relating to children and families (e.g., early childhood education, elementary education, special education, or social service professionals), for those wishing to teach early childhood coursework at a community college, and for those who plan to pursue doctoral-level studies in related fields such as child/human development, child and family studies, developmental psychology, and clinical/counseling psychology.

The Child Development Program has offered a Masters of Arts degree since 2000. This program provides training in core areas of child development, including development of the whole child from birth through adolescence, family studies, and research design and methodology. This program has a uniquely applied focus and integrates many areas relevant to child development, such as early childhood education, special education, counseling, and social work. Students exiting this program take with them skills that are marketable under current and expected socioeconomic conditions.

MPH students must complete all core coursework before enrolling in the MPH Applied Practice Experience. It is highly preferable for the applied practice experience to occur during summer term. The Integrative Learning Experience must be completed in the last term of study. There is no thesis requirement. Applicants to the epidemiology program should demonstrate strong quantitative skills. Applications for the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology are only accepted for Fall admission. The program generally takes 1.5 to 2 years to complete. University of Illinois undergraduate students who major in Kinesiology, Community Health, or Interdisciplinary Health Sciences are eligible to apply for a 5.5 year joint BS-MPH degree program after their 3rd (junior) year of undergraduate study. Students in the BS-MPH program begin some MPH coursework in their 4th (senior) year of undergraduate study, and begin graduate status in the MPH coursework in their 5th year of study.

Epidemiologists are individuals who have the personality of a “medical detective” in that they are able to design and participate in biomedical research studies to investigate what people do, or are exposed to that either increases or decreases their risk of acquiring a disease as well as the process of moving toward optimum health.  The epidemiologist studies the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations.  The process of conducting epidemiologic research incorporates the use of statistical techniques and an understanding of environmental, genetic, and social characteristics important in disease development and spread.  The investigative techniques employed by the epidemiologist has become an integral part of public health with epidemiologic findings that permeate all fields of public health.

Human physiology is the science of how the human body functions in health and disease.  

A degree in human physiology provides excellent preparation for careers or graduate study in biomedical research and the health professions or related disciplines.

Students examine human physiological systems from the molecular and cellular levels to the human body as a whole. This area of study uses basic science to measure human responses to internal and external stimuli (such as changes in activity levels, varying environmental conditions, and disease processes), and applies this knowledge to the promotion of human health.
