The Department of Mathematics offers undergraduate majors in Mathematics (BA or BS) and Adolescence Education: Mathematics (BA or BS) as well as Mathematics concentrations in Early Childhood & Childhood Education (BS) and Early Childhood Studies (BS). Also available is an accelerated BS Mathematics-MAT Adolescence Education: Mathematics program through which students may earn bachelor's and master's degrees in five years.

Students of mathematics at Eastern enjoy an outstanding learning environment. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a large number of courses, taught in small classes (maximum class size is 35, with most much smaller), by an exceptionally caring, dedicated, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable faculty.

The department offers three challenging and rewarding undergraduate majors (as well as two graduate degrees). One of these, the B.A. in Mathematics, has traditionally prepared students for advanced degrees, both in mathematics and in other fields such as medicine, law, business, and science. Students who are preparing for careers in industry or government often choose this major. They combine selected mathematics courses with courses in business, data processing, economics, physics, or chemistry, for example, to provide the background for a wide range of careers.

Data are everywhere. Statistics is the science of data interpretation, of using data to arrive at informed, intelligent decisions. Data are just the raw material of knowledge; being a statistician means having the ability to extract, synthesize, and communicate meaning from the sea of data that surrounds us in our information-saturated world. From astronomy; biology; economics; social science; education; public health; psychology; medicine; sports; and marketing; statisticians are relied on to advance the state of knowledge in the field. As statistician John Tukey put it, “The best thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyone else’s back yard.”

And another best thing about being a statistician? Employers want you! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for individuals with a background is statistics is projected to grow. Employment of statisticians is projected to increase 27% percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average job. This growth is expected to result from more widespread use of statistical analysis to make informed business, healthcare, and policy decisions. Furthermore, an increasing number of positions are available for those with only a bachelor’s level training.

The Department of Mathematics at Western Illinois University is committed to fostering a learning community rich in faculty-student interaction, collaboration on research, and promoting among our students an appreciation of mathematics. The Department?s graduate program offers a Master of Science and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. The graduate program prepares students for regional and nationwide in-demand professions. The masters program in the Department of Mathematics provides an alternative to the traditional programs by preparing students who would pursue a career in business, industry, or government, as well as to train mathematicians who would pursue further study towards a doctoral degree. The program offers a sufficiently flexible course structure, built on core courses and a wide range of specialized focus area courses.

By applying some courses simultaneously toward the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree, an advanced student can qualify for both degrees during the four years of undergraduate study. Admission to the BA/MA Program is by the standard graduate application form, completed and submitted no later than April 30 of the undergraduate student’s junior year of study. With the application, the applicant must supply an official copy of the current transcript and a statement of purpose. The GRE exams are not required, and the graduate application fee is waived. In addition, the applicant must have one member of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics submit a letter of recommendation.

A Mathematical Sciences B.S. student will choose from the following tracks: Actuarial Science, Biological Sciences, Computer & Information Science, Data Science, and Physical Sciences. All students take core courses in calculus and linear algebra, and then, depending on the chosen track, an array of upper-division mathematics courses and cognate courses from the partner discipline. Elective courses in mathematics, the partner discipline, and from the sciences at large are required and can be chosen in a manner that helps the student lay the groundwork for future graduate study, careers, or to take electives recommended for pre-med or pre-health professions students and is flexible enough to facilitate a double major with a program in the chosen partner discipline.

Mathematics at Arcadia University is part of a combined department in Computer Science and Mathematics. Our mathematics programs are designed to help students develop problem-solving skills as well as the theoretical insight needed both for applications and graduate study. Courses use state-of-the-art technology including graphing calculators, smart boards, Amazon Web Services cloud computing, programming tools such as Python, and statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, and R. Mathematics majors often minor in areas such as bioinformatics, computer science, or secondary education and many take advantage of our 3+2 engineering programs with the University of Pittsburgh and Washington University. The Mathematics Education major is designed to give students the required mathematical and pedagogical knowledge to be effective secondary school teachers. Mathematics courses together with required Education courses satisfy course requirements for Level-IV Endorsement in the state of Utah. Student seeking this endorsement will also pass a Praxis subject exam and will apply to the Utah State Board of Education for licensure. Mathematical content knowledge is assessed through classroom performance and through a comprehensive examination. Teaching effectiveness is assessed through observations and evaluations of a cooperating teacher in a secondary school, a supervising SUU Math professor, and a supervising Education professor.

Students in the applied mathematics concentration are trained to creatively use their strong mathematical background, through modeling, simulations and optimization, to solve a multitude of problems arising in industry and applied sciences. If your primary major is in engineering, physics or chemistry, you will substantially benefit from having applied mathematics as a second major: increased income upon graduation, enhanced chances of success through graduate school, or attractive research and development careers. You may also sign up for a stand-alone applied mathematics concentration based on a specific area of application of your choice. The advanced mathematics studies concentration is geared toward students interested in careers such as teaching and fundamental research at the university level, or those desiring careers in research, development and consulting in cutting edge areas requiring advanced math skills, such as artificial intelligence, cryptography, finance or national security analysis. The teacher licensure concentration is for students who want to become licensed to teach math to seventh- through 12th-graders in the state of Ohio. With this concentration, you’ll take a combination of math and education courses and spend time observing and teaching in local classrooms.

The department offers a broad range of courses designed to prepare students for careers or advanced study for those pursuing degrees in mathematics, engineering or mathematics education. For students whose major incorporates a significant mathematical component, e.g., in the physical sciences, economics and education, the department offers a curriculum that meets the special needs of these groups. For all those studying mathematics as part of the general requirements of a broad based liberal arts education, the department offers courses that support the mission of the university and cultivate those skills.
