The English department emphasizes preparation for Ph.D. work and advanced training both for secondary education teachers and those for whom an M.A. in English would enhance career options. We welcome students who, for whatever reasons, are eager to read literature on an advanced level, who enjoy research and writing, and who appreciate the responsibilities and pleasures of pursuing one's intellectual goals within an academic community.

The mission of the Department of African Cultural Studies is to provide research and teaching in the languages and expressive cultures of Africa and Africans around the world.

The department is the only one of its kind in the United States. It offers curricula leading to both the master of arts degree and the doctor of philosophy degree. Its students come from all over the world, including many African countries.

Latin American & Caribbean Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to give you a broad understanding Latin America and Caribbean people, societies, cultures, histories, artistic expressions, and diasporic movements. As a LACS major or minor, you will gain extensive knowledge of this vibrant and important world area from a range of disciplinary perspectives including Anthropology, Black Studies, Communications, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Language, Literatures and Cultures, Political Science, Sociology, Theater Arts, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Both the LACS major and minor plans of study require our foundational course, “Introduction to Latin American Studies” (LAM 270). One of the unique qualities of our program is that you design, along with your advisor, your plan of study from a wide range of classes offered in more than ten departments. The study of language and literature deepens self-understanding, opens up the broad diversity of human viewpoints and cultures, hones writing and thinking skills, and intensifies the appreciation of the arts of literature and writing. It develops the mind as it teaches skills in critical thinking, research, and communication valued in a wide variety of careers.

The Department of English at Eastern Illinois University offers five areas of emphasis to choose from: 1) Literary & Cultural Studies, 2) Professional Writing, 3) Creative Writing, 4) English Language Arts (teacher certification), and 5) English Studies (a very flexible choice for students who desire a more self-directed, but mentored program). We also offer minors in Literary & Cultural Studies, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, and English Language Arts (that last one is for those students with a major in another area of teacher education).

The WSU English Department offers three master’s degrees and one graduate certificate program.

Whether you plan on pursuing more education or a career in the field, our graduate programs will help you develop advanced critical thinking, reading, research, and writing skills.

Our graduate programs will also provide you with rigorous coursework in pedagogy and literary studies, composition and rhetoric, and language.

UVU’s English program is designed to give students skill, confidence, and versatility in writing, speaking, and interpreting texts. The program provides opportunities for students to consider and practice the applications of effective language use in diverse situations: professional, pragmatic, social, political, and aesthetic. The English program emphasizes knowledge and use of standard English in all written work, yet incorporates an understanding that English is a desirably diverse and variable phenomenon. The courses of study in English are designed to familiarize students with much of the traditional canon of literature. They are also designed to provide students with the critical and ethical skills necessary to interrogate this canon, to incorporate and legitimize their own and others’ “different” voices, not just in the academy, but in any of the many situations in which language influences human activity.

The department offers majors in English (Literature and Language) and English Education. Students in both options can take a variety of courses in areas reflecting the major approaches that define the study of language and literature today. The study of Forms provides students precise language and concepts to understand how the structures of literature inform its meaning. The study of Traditions emphasizes the historical development of literature, particularly in terms of British and American literatures. Language and Theory courses give students the tools to precisely understand language and reflect on how texts come to have meaning in a variety of discourses, cultural contexts, and philosophical perspectives. Social Justice courses encourage students to explore how literary studies address issues of cultural power and politics. Examples would include the role of literature in responding to racism, gender identities, class conflict, and disability. In addition, all majors take a professional development course and a capstone seminar. English Education majors take courses in the teaching of language, literature, and writing. 

The Department of English offers separate undergraduate and graduate programs, each designed to suit the needs of its particular student body. The undergraduate program, in the context of university requirements and elective courses, provides the basis for a liberal education and prepares students for graduate work or professional schools, such as medicine and law, as well as professional teaching and literary scholarship. The graduate program prepares advanced students for professional teaching careers in English literature.

The Master of Arts in Theology program is a well-balanced program of rigorous study in key theological areas, with the possibility of specialization. Courses rely on small-group discussion and close reading of primary texts as key learning strategies. Classes are scheduled to permit participation by working adults. Many classes will include a distance-education option, which will allow students who cannot come to campus to enroll and participate in the same classes with on-campus students via video-conferencing technology. 

The English department at Salem State offers a diverse and enthusiastic faculty ready to fully engage your intellect and imagination, with a broad and innovative array of classes, concentrations in areas such as film studies, creative writing, professional writing, and literature, and a unique and inspiring setting in beautiful and historic Salem, MA. Classes are small and student-focused, and are led by a faculty at the forefront of their respective fields. English majors at Salem State go on to successful careers in education, publishing, business, and public service. Most importantly, a degree in English from Salem State prepares students to think critically and creatively about their role in a rapidly changing cultural and professional environment.

We offer several theology master’s degree track options, depending on your specific educational and career objectives. Our Mercy spirituality track is a great fit for students who are involved in Mercy-sponsored work and interested in spiritual formation. We also offer a research seminar track for students who intend to pursue doctoral studies in theology, and a general Master of Arts track. This Majors Abroad Program (MAP) has an interdisciplinary focus on politics, history, international relations, and French language and culture.

The Major in French and Francophone Studies strongly encourages the student to spend one or two semesters abroad in France, at Hollins University in Paris. Visit studyabroad.arcadia.edu for more information. Students may choose to spend a semester abroad in another French speaking region or country, for instance, at l’Universite de Laval, Quebec.

Our literature courses seek to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of the unique value of literary expression as an aesthetic form that challenges the senses, the intellect, and the imagination. Students also learn to appreciate the complex relationship between the aesthetic and intellectual aspects of literature and the culture and time in which it was produced.

The mission of the professional education unit is to prepare candidates who attain educational achievement through collaboration and reflection. To that end the professional education unit (including content departments), collaborates with K-12 schools, Educational Service Cooperatives, Educational Renewal Zones and other local, state, and national organizations to inculcate high standards of educational achievement for all students. The Unit engages pre-service and in-service teachers, administrators, counselors and other educators to excel in teaching, leadership, scholarship and service.

The study of literature is an inherently practical endeavor, encompassing the processes of reading, analyzing, discussing, and writing. With practice, you'll see your communication and critical thinking skills expand significantly - skills that are immensely valuable in almost any career field. In the courses you study in this concentration, you will learn how to use language creatively, rhetorically, and in various professional contexts.

Twenty-four seven availability of content whether it’s on a news site or streaming to your phone continues to expand with more options for the consumer than ever. Traditional media and social phenomena' success are now tied to how global audiences respond.

Our language arts education program will turn you into an outstanding writer and language arts teacher. You’ll take liberal arts and literature courses alongside education courses and spend time observing and teaching in local classrooms. You’ll learn about child and adolescent development, curriculum, methods of teaching, and more. You'll have the ability to add on the I/S licensure and TESOL options. You’ll graduate ready to be licensed to teach language arts to seventh- through 12th-graders in Ohio.

Here, you’ll join a close-knit family of English-language lovers. From the time you arrive on campus until you graduate, you’ll be guided by the same faculty advisor. The primary goal of the BA in World Languages and Cultures at Georgia College is to provide students with a solid liberal arts education that becomes the foundation for personal and professional growth over a lifetime. The curriculum is designed to provide students with well-developed cognitive and communication skills and with a broad knowledge base that will enable them to pursue additional studies at the graduate level or to enter the job market in positions that demand the ability to communicate effectively, to reason critically, and to solve problems successfully, in more than one language and in a variety of cultural contexts.

In today’s rapidly increasing global economy, students may use foreign language study to add a valuable international dimension to numerous career opportunities in education, business, economics, government work, journalism, law, medicine, computer, and scientific research.

The German program at the University of Mount Union provides students with a unique opportunity to learn the language, history, literature, and culture of the German-speaking world. Students learn to communicate effectively in the language and to prepare themselves for careers in teaching, business, international relations, and the STEM fields. The German major is structured so students can complete a second major or minor in most disciplines and still have time to spend a semester or summer in a study abroad site in Germany. Graduates will be well prepared for success in our global world after completing the German degree requirements at the University of Mount Union

Upon completing the BA degree with a major in German Studies, students will have:
