The Biology program at New Paltz offers students excellent preparation for graduate school, medical school, or a career in industry or one of the many allied health fields. Our faculty-mentored research opportunities are unparalleled, and our modern, research-quality instrumentation enables students to pursue every interest from molecular signaling and environmental conservation to neurophysiology and animal behavior.

The field of biology is ideal for students who are deeply interested in how the natural world works and who want to learn more about it through targeted research. You can expect to take chemistry, math and liberal arts courses in addition to biology classes, plus you can choose a focus in areas such as botany, zoology, molecular biology or field biology. There’s even a biology teacher education concentration in conjunction with WOU’s College of Education.

If you have a passion for understanding how cells and living organisms function and enjoy scientific experimentation and field or laboratory studies, then you should consider majoring in biology. Biology is the study of living organisms (bacteria, algae, protozoans, fungi, plants, and animals). It is a large discipline that encompasses molecules and cells, organs and organ systems, organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems.

 Biologists study cell and molecular biology, genetics and evolution, organismal biology, systematics and ecology, and behavior. The Department of Biological Sciences offers bachelor's and master's degrees in Biological Sciences. When students complete a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, they are prepared for exciting careers in the sciences and eligible for graduate study in master or doctoral programs or health-related fields (e.g., chiropractors, clinical laboratory scientists, dentists, nurses, optometrists, pharmacists, physical therapists, physicians, and veterinarians). Biology is one of the most basic fields of science with direct application to humans. Our continued existence on the planet Earth will depend on how we resolve biological problems. Biology ranges in scale from biochemical processes inside individual cells to complex multicellular organisms to populations of organisms to ecosystems to the entire planet. A Master of Science in Biology allows our graduates to pursue careers in health care, biotechnology, conservation, government agencies, education, and a wide range of other fields.

The Biology Department offers a combined B.A./M.S. or B.S./M.S. degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. The combined degree is open only to Johns Hopkins University undergraduates majoring in Biology or Molecular and Cellular Biology.

The biochemistry, cell and molecular biology (BCMB) major is an interdisciplinary course of study with the Biology and Chemistry Departments. BCMB at Scranton includes the cutting edge topics of genomics (study of an organism’s entire genetic make-up), proteomics (study of the structure and functions of proteins) and bioinformatics (using technology to store and evaluate biological data).

Graduates with the BCMB major are prepared for advanced study, including medical school and research-based Ph.D. programs, or for biotechnical careers in the pharmaceutical, health or agricultural industries. 

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology prepares students in the major areas of the life sciences as well as in the cognate areas of Chemistry, Mathematics, and/or Physics.

Faculty advisers work closely with each student to plan a series of required and elective courses based on individual interests and career goals.

A core of basic science courses includes general biology, evolution and population biology, reading and writing in biology, comparative anatomy and physiology, genetics. A range of electives covers animal behavior, aquatic biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, conservation biology, developmental biology, histology, marine biology, microbiology, molecular biology, neurobiology, pathophysiology and more..

Laboratory sections generally have smaller enrollments than lecture and thus are especially good for interaction with faculty and other students and for integrative, collaborative and inquiry-based learning.

It is the policy of the Biology Department that General Biology I and II must be taken in the Biology Department at Arcadia or transferred in from an accredited four- or two-year college. Credits earned through an Advanced Placement Exam or International Baccalaureate do not substitute for General Biology I or II.  Students enrolled in the biology major at Arcadia are expected to take their biology courses at Arcadia or at an approved study abroad site.

The B.S. Biology Secondary Education with Integrated Science emphasis is designed for students seeking a career in secondary education.  Successful completion of this degree, the secondary education program and the required PRAXIS exams, allows students to obtain the Biological Sciences and the Mid-Level Science endorsement. This certifies the student to teach high school biology and 7th & 8th grade science.

A Master of Public Health in Biostatistics offers exceptional opportunities to contribute to transforming public health by solving real-world problems like disease outbreaks and environmental and industrial hazards, using skills that few people have. This professional degree program, a natural direction for individuals with strengths in applied mathematics, includes course work focused on biostatistical methods and programming and data management in the context of public health, as well as a core of courses spanning multiple disciplines of public health. The program also includes field training and a comprehensive examination. The MPH is typically a two-year program, but can be completed in less time by well-prepared students.

Southern Utah University’s biology major educates students in a variety of areas, including: botany, forensic science, biology education, zoology. Because classes are purposely kept small, students have opportunities to work closely with their biology instructors on research projects, assignments, and field trips to the major ecoregions located within driving distance of SUU. This combination of coursework and experiential learning prepares students for post-baccalaureate pursuits.

Biology majors can pursue Massachusetts state licensure by completing the secondary education concentration. In doing so, you will be eligible to receive a license to teach Biology, grades 8-12, in Massachusetts.

The experience you gain at Endicott is comprehensive. You will complete freshman and sophomore internships in a range of school settings, a sophomore and junior field experience connected to your secondary education courses, a junior year pre-practicum, and senior year full practicum experience. Upon graduation, you will have completed all of the requirements necessary to apply for an initial license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and you will be eligible to pursue licensure in many other states. Students receive free preparation for the required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) as part of the program.

The Biology, B.S. with a Molecular Biology concentration allows you to undertake cutting-edge independent research with our faculty scientists, and gain real-world experience through internships at leading facilities such as Pfizer, MIT, New York-Presbyterian, and more.

The degree includes a core curriculum in humanities and research principles and practices, followed by coursework in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, evolutionary biology, general and organic chemistry, physics, and calculus.

With the concentration in Molecular Biology, you’ll choose from electives in areas such as virology, genetic engineering, immunology, pharmacology, and more, allowing you to prepare for a career in biotechnology, genetics, biomedical research, and more.

You'll get critical experience through internships at metropolitan area hospitals such as Columbia University Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital and pharmaceutical companies like Advanced Biotech, Boheringer Ingleheim, and Pfizer.

For a student in the Master of Science in Biology program, there are a variety of concentrations that you can pursue within either the thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option is designed for students who intend to pursue research-oriented careers in science. Many students who choose this option move into Ph.D. programs. The non-thesis option is designed for students who do not intend to pursue research-oriented careers in science. Most of these students intend to pursue either a medical or teaching career.

Regardless of what track you choose, all graduates of this program will successfully complete at least one course each in cellular/molecular, ecology/evolution and organismal biology before receiving a master's degree.

The University of Mount Union’s Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry degree is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee and prepares students for rewarding careers in biotechnology, molecular biology, pharmacology, and other health and medical sciences.
