The Department of Theatre and Dance is dedicated to two primary goals: to provide students with the highest caliber of training in theatre and dance that will allow them to create performances of any kind at any level, and to provide the southern Minnesota region with a multi-faceted, high quality theatrical and dance experience. These goals interweave to provide entertainment and education to those on both sides of the curtain. 

At Washburn we see Theatre as a transformative force in the world. While we want to entertain with theatre, we also believe that by creating worlds on the stage we inspire the ability to create and shape the world outside the theatre.  Students who major in theatre acquire skills that prepare them for life well beyond the stage.

The bachelors degree in Digital Media Technology provides students with opportunities to learn about the processes involved in the planning, development and publishing of web content, games, animation, visual effects, interactive simulation and other multimedia. Graduates of this program are expected to be technical management-oriented professionals for employment in creative, advertising, educational, and other commercial environments.

The Film and Media Studies Program offers a comprehensive education in all aspects of the art, theory, and history of the moving image. We offer courses in critical studies, screenwriting and filmmaking—narrative, documentary, experimental film, animation —within a rigorous curriculum designed to foster critical understanding and historical knowledge. Student filmmakers and scholars explore the relationship of film and media to modern cultures, literatures, art, history, and philosophy in a new 20,000 square foot facility that offers an enhanced learning environment as well as all the tools available to professional filmmakers: a large sound stage, a recording studio, computer labs, editing suites, a screening room, classrooms, and state-of-the-art equipment.

Our faculty, comprised of renowned scholars and filmmakers, is known for its dedication to teaching and promoting a highly collaborative and nurturing environment. Our small size allows us to offer undergraduates an unusual amount of hands-on experience, intensive mentoring, individual attention, and access to special opportunities.

Social media is one of the fastest growing industries in recent history. The main goal of the program is to give students the required skill-sets and knowledge to create and manage social media marketing campaigns. Students will learn oral, written, visual, and production skills that are required to run effective multi-platform social media campaigns independently, or as part of larger integrated multi-media marketing communication campaigns. Students will also learn to effectively use social media and other forms of digital media for crowd sourcing, advocacy, user generated content management, issues management, crisis communication and response, search engine optimization, digital analytics, program evaluation, and social media research. 

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting is an intensive four-year sequential course of study in acting, the speaking voice, speech, movement, stage combat, dramatic literature and the history of the theater. The schedule is rigorous; in a typical week, a student works directly with faculty for 27 to 40 hours and spends a comparable amount of time in preparation.

The first two years of training focus on the development of the actor’s imagination and an exploration of the inner resources as they relate to the external demands of the craft. During the third and fourth years, classroom work broadens to consider the elements of style and modes of behavior in various historical periods. B.F.A. candidates are continuously engaged in rehearsal and public performance.

An education in Visual Arts can be defined as the process whereby one learns how to produce art; engage in the aesthetic and critical analysis of art, and to talk, read, and write about art. Students at Utah Tech will be exposed to numerous concepts and activities involved in becoming visually and aesthetically literate. As part of their artistic study students will become proficient in their art discipline. Students will have opportunity to visit major regional art museums and exhibit artwork both on and off campus.

The Film and Television B.A. provides a liberal arts education as well as coursework in film and television history, theory, and production. Film and television majors take courses in three distinct areas: cinema and media studies (history, theory, and aesthetics); production (film, television, digital, experimental, and animation); and film and television craft (writing, directing, photography, sound recording, and editing).

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Arts with a Photography Emphasis is a professional degree that focuses on the intensive study of both the technical and conceptual aspects of photography supported by a program of general studies. This degree develops students’ understanding of and skill in the production of lens-based images in contemporary culture. The coursework emphasizes visual literacy by educating the students’ viewpoint and equipping the student with the necessary skills to develop, progress, and execute their ideas.

Upon completion of the degree, students must exhibit creative ability and potential in the visual arts, problem-solving ability, self-motivation, and the ability to demonstrate their competency in the medium by developing a body of work for evaluation and exhibition.

In the TV/Film Production concentration, students take classes where they explore multiple modes of narrative and documentary storytelling. Beginning with the first semester on campus, students create video projects while learning about different formats, including digital streaming media and virtual/augmented reality.

Coursework and hands-on experience at Endicott and through internships will provide a strong foundation in the field, culminating in a visual thesis project that demonstrates how aesthetic theory informs applied professional practice. Career possibilities are numerous, not just within the broadcasting and video production industries, but also in a number of related fields where creative and technical skills are valued.

Students will gain hands-on experience in Endicott’s Digital Media Center, a full TV studio, control room, and post-production area located in the School of Communication.

The Digital Arts, B.F.A. gives you a rich foundation in computer animation and digital arts production through diverse courses and collaborations that hone your creative, design, and technical talents.

You’ll work with one of the most well-equipped, highly advanced art media labs in the New York metropolitan area, including state-of-the-art hardware, 2-D, 3-D, and graphics software applications, motion capture, gaming, 3-D printing, and emerging technologies.

If you answered yes to all three questions, then an Associate of Arts in Media Arts and Production from Lawrence Tech might be the program for you. Not only will you broaden your knowledge and expand your career options, this degree can be used as a steppingstone toward LTU’s Bachelor of Arts in Media Communication.

Based on a previous partnership between Lawrence Tech and the Specs Howard School of Media Arts, the practical knowledge you acquire through the completion of the Specs@LTU program can be combined with LTU’s core liberal arts curriculum plus several media communication courses to earn your associate degree–credits that can also be transferred to LTU’s Bachelor of Arts in Media Communication.

After successfully completing either the Broadcast Media Arts or the Digital Media Arts program through Specs@LTU, you are eligible to transfer 24 credits toward the 61 credit hours required for the AAMAP degree. This program is offered exclusively to Specs@LTU students and former Specs Howard students and is not open for general admission.

Our unique program focuses on theatrical design, production and stage management – in the U.S. and internationally. You’ll graduate with a solid knowledge of the cultural and practical differences in theatre production, which will prepare you for a wide range of careers in theatre, opera and touring productions.

We may be small, but our opportunities are big. In fact, our theatre program rivals what you’d find at a conservatory. Our international theatre production students stage dozens of campus and community productions. They interact with renowned designers, directors, playwrights and choreographers from the U.S. and countries like Scotland, Estonia, Ireland, Mexico and England. They travel each year to the United States Institute of Theatre Technology conference so our students can make contacts with employers and companies from all over the United States. They land incredible internships with theatre companies, and they study abroad.

Theatre skills include presentational skills needed by leaders in business, teachers, politicians and many other career professionals who engage in leadership and consensus-building. Technical skills can be applied to all forms of dramatic presentation: television, film and stage productions of all kinds, including political rallies, concerts, or theme park events. It is the aim of the theatre program to provide students with the skills and intellectual competence that will lead to success in the world of theatre and beyond.

The University of Mount Union’s Bachelor of Arts in Theatre allows students to gain knowledge about the theatre through various courses and hands-on learning.
