The Environmental Sciences major satisfies the growing demand among entry-level students for a rigorous, science-based program that promotes critical thinking and emphasizes environmental problem solving in service to society. The program is designed to prepare graduates who will be highly competitive for entry-level positions in nonprofit and private sectors, and for master’s programs and doctoral research programs in environmental fields. Possible career paths include environmental monitoring, consulting, education, research, and planning, as well as natural resource management, ecology restoration, remediation, water and air quality assessment, sustainability practices, and more. Undergraduates in Environmental Sciences prepare for a variety of career and graduate school opportunities that require a strong background in the natural sciences. Foundational course work in the major includes calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. Core and elective course work is fulfilled through diverse offerings from both the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the College of Letters & Science.

The Department of Geography offers comprehensive liberal arts majors in Geography and, starting in Fall 2021, Environmental Studies. For those majoring in other fields, minors in Geography, Urban Planning and Environmental Studies are available. 

Geography is a diverse and integrative discipline that allows students to explore and make sense of place, space, and landscape and the connections between them, while also learning to analyze problems from multiple perspectives. Our programs are designed to prepare students for graduate study in geography or for employment in fields actively seeking geographers. Students may choose the general Geography major, leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, or Geography concentrations in environmental geography and in urban planning, leading to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. The concentration in urban planning is for students who wish to undertake graduate study in planning or to obtain employment in that field. A Geographic Information System (GIS) sequence is offered in addition to courses in Cartography and Remote Sensing.

Environmental Sciences is an applied science designed to study interactions among biological, chemical and physical components of the environment. Major areas of focus include water quality, climate change, biodiversity, and environmental assessment with an emphasis on experiential learning through research and/or internships. This program is orientated towards helping students develop skills for leadership positions in industry, consulting firms, government and environmental groups, as well as providing a foundation for individual community involvement as an informed citizen. 

Environmental biologists focus at the organismal and environmental system level, and as an environmental biology student at Washburn, you’ll learn with experts in the fields of entomology, herpetology, plant genetics, and conservation. With a faculty mentor in your area of interest, you’ll complete at least one semester of research, which may be lab or field based. Internships also are available with our many partners, including The Topeka Zoo. You’ll graduate with experience and the technical skills and knowledge you need to begin your career.

Washburn’s Karlyle Woods field station means you can be in the field and close to home. Experiential field work opportunities in other areas also are available for qualified students.

Geoscience programs at Winona State University prepare students for a broad spectrum of careers and/or entry to graduate school through a discovery-based undergraduate curriculum rich with field and research opportunities. 

Geoscience graduates solve a broad range of environmental problems as consultants in both industry and government; they discover and manage our planet’s mineral and energy resources; they teach in our elementary schools, high schools and colleges; they work in museums and national parks; they practice environmental law and write for newspapers and magazines; they even explore other planets. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Geoscience is an interdisciplinary field that connects with many other disciplines in virtually unlimited ways.

Environmental Science is the study of the Earth’s surface, including its water and atmosphere, with a particular focus on their relationship to humans and other living things. Environmental Science applies chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology to answer questions about the Earth and its interrelationships with living things. Environmental Management focuses on the maintenance of environmental resources, for example water resources. Environmental scientists may conduct studies in the field, in the laboratory using advanced analytical equipment, and in the office using specialized computer software. The program is preparation for a variety of career paths, including water monitoring, treatment, and pollution control with local, state or federal agencies; environmental consulting with private industry; and other careers that draw on a background in the natural sciences, including law, public policy, and public health.

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary major that introduces students to the ways in which human activities impact Earth systems and vice versa. It equips students to use a variety of tools, such as science, policy, communication, and individual and societal behavior change, to solve environmental and sustainability problems, with an emphasis on the perspectives and tools of the natural sciences. Environmental Science majors must complete a set of core courses common to both ENVS majors, including a senior capstone and an applied experience, plus several additional natural science core courses and a suite of electives in the student's area of interest.

The Earth, Energy, and Environmental Sciences major is an interdisciplinary study of the relevant natural science disciplines, with emphases in either the Geosciences or the Environmental Sciences. This program provides knowledge and experience through lecture, laboratory, and field courses that immerse the students into the world around them. Students will analyze and solve problems associated with use of energy, water, and mineral resources; in protection of the environment; in planning for the impact of natural hazards; and in sustainable approaches to societal development. The region and ecosystems that surround Utah Tech University provide the ideal laboratory to apply concepts to the earth, energy, and environmental issues that impact the future of humanity. Emphases in the Geosciences and the Environmental Sciences are available depending on the student interests. 

The Earth and Environmental Sciences major is for students interested in interactions between the solid Earth, oceans, atmosphere, the biosphere, and human environments. This broad-based major is well suited for students considering careers in K through 12 education, especially in the Earth, physical, or life sciences. It can also prepare students for careers in environmental science, law, government, business, journalism, public health, medicine, or dentistry. Students who wish to prepare for careers as professional geologists, geochemists, or geophysicists and/or graduate studies in Earth or space sciences should consider one of the B.S. degree programs in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geophysics.

Environmental science majors may pursue Massachusetts state licensure by completing the secondary education concentration. In doing so, you will be eligible to receive a license to teach Earth and Space Science, grades 8-12, in Massachusetts.

The experience you gain at Endicott is comprehensive. You will complete freshman and sophomore internships in a range of school settings, a sophomore and junior field experience connected to your secondary education courses, a junior year pre-practicum, and senior year full practicum experience. Upon graduation, you will have completed all of the requirements necessary to apply for an initial license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and you will be eligible to pursue licensure in many other states. Students receive free preparation for the required Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) as part of the program.

What happens to fertilizer after it runs off the lawn and goes down the sewer? How about detergent once it’s poured down the sink? And how does black smoke from an industrial building’s chimney affect the atmosphere? 

These are the kinds of issues environmental chemists try to understand – all within the context of chemical systems. Their strong grounding in laboratory training and chemical theory provides the expertise to address some of our most pressing concerns: pollution prevention, hazardous waste management, chemical health and safety, environmental analysis, inspection and compliance, and the synthesis of biodegradable and photodegradable materials.

As an environmental chemist, you might work in a laboratory setting – or outside of it, researching, developing, and testing environmentally friendly products. You might also collect and analyze samples, develop remediation programs, advise on safety and environmental emergency response, or deal with government regulations and compliance issues.

The natural sciences form the backbone of the environmental and field biology program. You’ll take courses in biology, natural history, chemistry, botany, geology and ecology. As a freshman, you’ll be in the lab or field working directly with your professors ( not graduate assistants ) investigating some of the most important environmental issues. Throughout your four years, you’ll design and conduct your own experiments, engage in mentored field research, and job-shadow environmental professionals. 

Environmental sciences is a program of study designed for students to explore the interrelationships between human and natural systems. This is an interdisciplinary endeavor requiring insights from a variety of disciplines including biology, chemistry, geography, geology, the social sciences, political science and economics. Students completing this major are well prepared for employment in a variety of state and federal agencies, consulting firms or for admission into graduate school.

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences prepares students to explore the interrelationships between human and natural systems and to think critically and analytically in order to solve the environmental problems facing our society. The University of Mount Union’s Bachelor of Science in environmental science emphasizes examining environmental issues through hands-on field and laboratory activities. The Metropolitan Food & Environmental Systems (MFST) program uses an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and implementing solutions in the area of urban food and environmental systems to ensure the sustainability of readily available nutritious foods for metropolitan populations. The students in this major will learn to understand the science and practice of food production and security across urban environmental, economic, social, and health contexts, while maintaining environmental sustainability. Students in this program will be prepared for jobs in impact areas related to food systems, such as government, non-governmental organizations, institutional food buyers, investment firms, financial and insurance companies, industry, retail, and food service. Alternatively, students may choose to pursue post-baccalaureate education, including law school and graduate school in food systems or in specific areas of the food system. Because the MFST curricula includes required training in STEM education, critical thinking, scientific literacy, communication and leadership, students will obtain the skills necessary to traverse an ever-changing job market and have the freedom to choose from many career-life options.
