AYA Integrated Language Arts (BA) at The University of Akron

Our course of study of literature, language, rhetoric, and creative writing fosters the development of critical thinking, skilled communication, appreciation of cultural contexts, informed citizenship, and knowledge of the various literary texts representing human thought and inquiry through the centuries. Students majoring in English studies go on to become successful professionals in their chosen fields. Graduates have taken the department’s reputation into the world outside the campus gates and hold careers ranging from positions in successful law practices, to jobs as published authors, technical writers, and journalists.

In this age of globalization, study of a foreign language, such as Spanish, is understanding diverse, culturally rooted behaviors, attitudes and communication.

As an English major, you will learn to appreciate culture and language as you study literature, writing, film, theatre, and digital communications.

The English program at USM is designed to help you master reading comprehension, problem solving, critical thinking, and effective writing. You’ll be introduced to the tools of formal written analysis, along with learning literary history in the U.S. and abroad, critical theory, and research strategy.

Our faculty work with you closely—developing all areas of communication, while also initiating regular discussion about the ways literature and language have influenced you, our society, and societies around the world.
