Bachelors in Language in USA

Students who pursue the Latin major read a wide variety of authors and can expect to achieve a high level of competency in the ancient language of the Romans. Coursework includes such favorites as Vergil, Ovid, Cicero, Julius Caesar, and Catullus, but students can expect to be able to read other authors like the historians (Livy, Sallust, and Tacitus) and genres like lyric, satire, and drama.

The Department of English offers several programs designed to give students a knowledge of their linguistic, literary and cultural heritage and to develop their skills as writers and critics. Each of the tracks within the major has its own requirements. These programs prepare students for careers in teaching, publishing, communications, and public and private administration. They also prepare students for graduate work in English and in a variety of other disciplines in which effective reading, writing and critical thinking skills are important, such as business, law and medicine.

The undergraduate French degree programs serve students who are seeking high proficiency in French language and cultural studies. Program courses focus on real-world communication skills, and our instructors promote a student-centered, immersion-based learning environment that encourages the open exchange of ideas, instills awareness of cultural differences, and encourages a deeper understanding of events, institutions, and traditions. Students are asked to reflect on the nature and value of literary, cinematic, and artistic works as part of a larger inquiry into the making of cultures. Coursework fosters self-awareness and respect for others through reading and discussion, and offers opportunities for interaction with a wide variety of people, products, and perspectives from France, Canada, Western Africa, and numerous other countries and regions in which French is an official or commonly spoken language. 

If you want to be able to communicate in Spanish in any work setting, Washburn can help you get there. More than half of all language majors at Washburn University combine language learning with another discipline, from business or nursing to psychology or social work. You will study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, and you will be eligible for internships locally. You also will gain Spanish language proficiency in speaking, reading, writing and critical thinking that will set you up for career success.

English is another of WOU’s versatile and career-focused majors. If you are interested in languages, literature or writing, this is the program for you. You’ll learn about major literary works and various theories of criticism. Writing classes will help you refine your research and writing skills and become a pro at composition history and theory. Our linguistics classes allow you to develop an understanding of the nature, history and structure of language.

Students majoring in Spanish learn to communicate with people from Latin America and Spain . . . and so much more. Master the basics of grammar and conversation, then move on to advanced classes in Latin American and Spanish literature and culture. Our teaching methods follow the standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages to give you both linguistic and cultural proficiency.

Customize your Spanish program! Our flexible major in World Languages and Cultures allows you to combine Spanish classes with work in other departments related to international or diversity studies. Choose coursework from areas such as history, geography, or political science. Or pick up an introductory course in French, German, or Chinese. Many students double major or minor in related fields such as Latin American Studies. 

A major in World Languages and Cultures with a concentration in Spanish gives you skills employers want. Our students can form relationships with people from diverse communities, work comfortably with uncertainty and ambiguity, and communicate effectively in both English and Spanish. Our recent graduates currently enjoy careers including insurance agent, law enforcement dispatcher, nurse, behavior specialist, travel agent, college admissions recruiter, study abroad coordinator, and lawyer.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Foreign Languages and Cultures, with options in French, Spanish, French Teacher Education, and Spanish Teacher Education. Minor programs are available in French and Spanish. The formal study of one of the languages consists of courses in the language as well as courses in the literatures and cultures of the countries where these languages are spoken. The study of language, culture, and literature prepares the student for advanced and graduate study in literature and/or language, and for the use of language in business and industry, government at the federal, state, or local level, law enforcement, libraries and museums, parks and recreation, social services and health-related fields, transportation and tourism, and numerous other areas having a multicultural clientele.

As a Spanish major you'll increase your speaking and writing abilities through discrete Composition and Conversation courses and also study Spanish and Latin American literature and culture.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers graduate and undergraduate courses in the languages, literatures, and cultures of France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Latin America, and Spain. The language programs include a wide range of courses from introductory through conversation and composition to civilization. The literature programs treat all periods of literature from both historical and critical-theoretical perspectives. These courses emphasize the close reading of texts and modern theories of literary criticism, particularly those based on contemporary philosophy, psychoanalysis, anthropology, and linguistics. In addition, an active program of visiting professors and lecturers complements the core program offered by the faculty-in-residence.

Our program prepares students with practical skills that translate into real-world strengths. We will prepare you to take the lead as a writer or communicator in any career path you may choose.

As an English major, you will learn to appreciate culture and language as you study literature, writing, film, theatre, and digital communications.

The English program at USM is designed to help you master reading comprehension, problem solving, critical thinking, and effective writing. You’ll be introduced to the tools of formal written analysis, along with learning literary history in the U.S. and abroad, critical theory, and research strategy.

The English Master of Arts program continues to build on these opportunities, offering courses that stress effective writing in a broad array of genres, critical thinking, and interpretive skills, even as it fosters the growth of initiative and self-confidence—qualities much in demand in today’s professional world.   The  flexibility of the program ensures that, whether students complete the program on a full-time or part-time schedule, they can pursue their academic goals while maintaining their individual lives and professional responsibilities. 

In accordance with NCTE/NCATE program standards for initial preparation of teachers of secondary language arts, our English education courses help students adopt and strengthen professional dispositions and skills needed by English language arts teachers. Students integrate knowledge of English, students, and teaching.

Southern Utah University offers a bachelor of the arts in French, a B.A. in French teaching and a French minor. The program has tutors and other opportunities to help students learn and practice speaking with others. Knowledge of French prepares students to compete in the global economy and enhances career opportunities in many fields. Pairing a French major with a second major (such as art history, political science, English, history, biology, business, or economics) makes students more marketable.

At ONU, you can learn to understand, speak, read and write Spanish. The University of Mount Union’s Bachelor of Arts in English program explores writing from the past and the present to develop its students into eloquent and persuasive communicators. English majors will explore a wide variety of concepts through courses in literature and writing with the help of dedicated faculty.
 

The Major in Comparative & World Literature, World Literature Concentration focuses on breadth in the study of literatures and cultures from around the globe, read in English translation (no foreign language required beyond the General Education requirement). This concentration can be easily combined with a certificate in Translation Studies, a major or minor in Global Studies, Area Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, or majors and minors in anthropology, cinema and media studies, history, music, political science, philosophy, world religion, the visual arts, and related fields.
