What kind of learning emerges from and with art practice, and how does such learning further impact upon arts practice? This reflexive question lies at the heart of the MPhil/PhD Art Practice & Learning.

The program aims to promote practice research into the dialogical relations between pedagogical and art practices; a central purpose is to expand understanding of what both can become.

The program anticipates that through an exploration and interrogation of the dialogical relations between arts practices and pedagogies, sites of practice and sites of learning you will engage with areas such as philosophical, political and aesthetic and material dimensions of learning and practice.

The master of arts in teaching (MAT) is designed to facilitate the earning of an advanced degree while also completing requirements for a North Carolina license to teach. The MAT is offered in elementary education, English education, family and consumer science, health education, history education, middle grades education, music education, science education, special education (general curriculum, MAT Course Sequence III), and vocational education (business education and marketing education).

Some of the programs are offered part-time for lateral entry teachers. Most part-time candidates begin in the NC Teach alternative licensure program.

The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in middle school mathematics for students who wish to obtain licensure in mathematics for grades five through eight.

This program is designed for students who only want to teach middle school mathematics. The program offers these students a shorter pathway to obtain middle school licensure. The program also better prepares future educators to navigate the unique developmental stage of middle school students (grades five through eight).

Students complete required mathematics courses in the following areas: analytic geometry, calculus, statistics, concepts of number and operations, geometry, discrete mathematics, and history of mathematics.

In addition, students complete professional education courses to prepare them for teaching and participate in early field experiences in local middle schools.
