Drawing from your experience as a visual artist, discover art making’s potential to help others gain self-awareness and understanding. Through our art therapy program, study to promote healing through drawing, painting, sculpting, and other media. Train alongside world-recognized faculty in a national hub for mental health practice and research, and spend 1,150 hours in the field fostering well-being in individuals, families, and communities.

At Lesley University, you’ll continue to explore your identity as an artist while developing as an art therapist. You will build the foundational skills and experiences needed to become a licensed mental health counselor. Working within our cross-disciplinary community, build your expertise in the therapeutic applications for art making, while finding opportunities to collaborate with students working in diverse artistic disciplines, from drama to music to writing.

UW–Madison's art education program provides essential preparation for a variety of careers in art education. Students work directly with children and adolescents in both school and community-based field placements in every semester of the program. They study with outstanding art and education faculty in a range of rigorous and engaging studio, art history, curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, and educational policy studies courses, while also connecting with Madison’s vibrant arts community through field trips and service learning.

Graduates of our program earn a Bachelor of Science degree, a career-ready Wisconsin teaching license in PK–12 art education, and gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to teach the visual arts in public and private schools, at the elementary and secondary levels, in the United States and internationally, and in community settings such as art museums, maker spaces, and senior centers.

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Elementary Education Program prepares teachers to foster high academic achievement in all students—no matter who they are or what zipcode they were born into. In our program, teachers-to-be learn to recognize how their own backgrounds shape their thinking and actions, how racial hierarchies disserve all students, and how powerful teachers can change kids' lives.

Schools are places that can both increase equity and perpetuate injustice, which are ideas our students tackle as they learn to navigate the challenges and joys of teaching. Our goal is for all our graduates to become teacher leaders committed to advancing justice through classroom practices, personal interactions and community engagement. We teach research-based practices that keep teachers growing throughout long careers.
