The biology major is intended to give students an undergraduate education with an emphasis on several broad areas within the science of biology. It is strongly recommended that all Biology majors take Calculus, have one year of Physics, and minor in Chemistry. Computer science proficiency is highly recommended.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from BHSU provides students the opportunity to explore the diverse sub-disciplines of biology. Students may choose an emphasis in Environmental Biology with laboratory and field courses that focus on ecological principles, plant and animal biology, and conservation; or an emphasis in Cellular Biology and Physiology with lecture and laboratory courses ranging from Cell & Molecular biology, to Neurobiology, and Genomics. Through the rigorous curricula provided in both emphases, students will learn to design experiments, interpret biological data and communicate biological concepts and research findings effectively.

Hold the keys to understanding the world at its most principal scale with a degree in Chemistry from Black Hills State University. Chemistry is often called the 'Central Science' because chemists study matter at the molecular level. At BHSU, we have small class sizes allowing strong student-faculty interaction and highly focused instruction. All of our Chemistry courses are directly taught by faculty, not by graduate students as you would see in many other universities.

Students who graduate from our Chemistry program have a comprehensive understanding of General, Organic, Analytical, Inorganic, and Instrumental Chemistry and Biochemistry.

At BHSU, you have full access to all chemistry equipment. Our faculty are always eager to work on experiments and original research; as part of the Chemistry program, you will have hands-on experience in the world of Chemistry. 

At Black Hills State University, the environmental physical science program includes the identification, study, and treatment of a variety of environmental problems. The program addresses ground and surface water quality and management, waste treatment, land-use planning, soil testing, containment chemistry and monitoring, hazardous waste disposal, land reclamation and energy management and production.

The School of Natural Sciences at BHSU is committed to quality undergraduate programs in the natural sciences, with an emphasis on involving students in research and internship experiences.

Exploratory Studies is a two-semester program that helps students discover the major that best reflects their interests and ambitions. With the guidance of our Retention & Recruitment Specialists and university faculty, students are given the luxury of a non-pressured environment to consider their future. Each student is assigned an experienced Retention & Recruitment Specialist who is an expert in each of the Black Hills State University schools and degree programs. A course schedule is created for each student specifically tailored to their interests and ambitions, allowing them to fulfill general requirements, while exploring all that Black Hills State University has to offer.

Courses can be taken at our campus in Spearfish, online, or at the University Center in Rapid City.

The Mathematics Program offers a rigorous environment that enhances mathematical maturity, self-confidence, and an appreciation for lifelong learning through relevant studies and research. The Program prepares students for many different careers from finance and software development to math education, as well as service courses for other disciplines that require a math component and aids in the preparation of teachers in elementary and middle school mathematics.

Math majors at BHSU take classes in statistics and computer programming. These are critical areas which are only becoming more important each year. Another great course is Financial Mathematics, a popular elective in which students learn about investments such as stocks, bonds, and options, from a mathematical point of view. This course also helps prepare students for the first actuarial exam, a huge advantage in internship opportunities, etc. Finally, courses in Discrete Mathematics and Combinatorics will focus on writing correct proofs… But also on solving fun puzzles, such as:

The Math and Science Education major at Black Hills State University equips students to meet the tremendous demand for math and science teachers. The program provides a composite teaching major in science and math. Students prepare to teach math and select a science teaching field from biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics.

A high percentage of BHSU graduates in Math and Science Education are hired immediately after graduation, since they are well prepared to teach in two fields greatly needed throughout the nation. They are also prepared to enter graduate schools in education, research, science, or law.

The major in Physical Science is designed to provide you with broad, rigorous training in both physics and chemistry with introductory courses in the earth sciences, as well. Physical Science includes the branches of natural science and sciences that study non-living systems, contrasting the biological sciences.

With courses in such areas as Photojournalism, Public Relations Case Study, Media Law, and Organizational Communication, students learn how businesses and organizations communicate effectively. Students then apply this knowledge and hone their skills through hands-on projects at BHSU and throughout the region.

Every business and organization is involved with Public Relations, and careers can be found in a number of fields. Some students choose to work in advertising, while others find employment with media outlets, and a few become public information officers.

The Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction (MSCI) graduate programs at Black Hills State University (BHSU) facilitate professional growth while preparing education professionals for leadership in roles beyond the classroom. As a practicing teacher and graduate student, you will have opportunities to take online and site-based coursework directly into the classroom and into leadership experiences to better connect theory to practice and to expand your understanding of research and research-based practices.
