Quacquarelli Symonds(QS), a London-based global higher education analyst, has released the QS World University Rankings 2023. The 19th edition features over 1400 universities from around the world. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues its record-breaking streak at number one for the 12th consecutive year. Meanwhile, the University of Cambridge and Stanford University rank second and third, while the University of Oxford and Harvard University receive fourth and fifth positions on the list. 

Institutions are assessed across six categories, namely Academic Reputation, Academic Reputation, Faculty/Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Student Ratio, and International Faculty Ratio. 

Universities that maintain their previous year’s rank in the top 10 are Stanford University (3), Harvard University (5), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) (6), UCL (8), and the University of Chicago (10). 

The top universities in the Citations Per Faculty indicator are MIT (score 100), Harvard University (100), Caltech (100), Indian Institute of Science (100), and Stanford University (99.9). 

The QS WUR 2023 ranking features 27 US universities as opposed to 28 last year. Seventeen UK universities gain a spot in the top 100 for 2023, the same as last year. 

Forty-one Indian universities are ranked by QS this year, against 35 last year. Of the total Indian institutions, 12 have improved their positions, 12 maintain their ranks, and 10 have slipped positions. Seven new institutions have debuted on the list.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, the top-ranked Indian university, has moved 31 places up from 2022 and ranks at 155th spot. Other Indian universities that rank high are the IIT Bombay (=172), IIT Delhi (=174), IIT Madras (250), and IIT Kanpur (=264). 

The University of Delhi has ranked between 521–530, and Jawahar Lal Nehru University enters the QS WUR 2023 at 601–650.
