History

The university system was founded in 1948 by Governor Thomas E. Dewey, who signed a bill authorizing it as part of his agenda to promote a superior educational system. It was originally named The State University of New York when it opened in 1948. The acronym SUNY was adopted later that year, and it refers today to all 64 campuses throughout the state. The first classes were held in September 1948, nine months after Dewey’s death. SUNY is governed by a Board of Trustees with 24 members, six ex officio members, and 17 elected members.
