University Location

SUNY Buffalo is the most comprehensive public university in New York. UB is spread across three campuses: North Campus, South Campus, and Downtown Campus. The North Campus is located on the outskirts of Amherst, and it is where most of the university’s core academic programs are offered. This campus started in the early 1970s and is the largest of our three campuses. South Campus dates back to the 1920s, and the schools of Architecture and Planning, Dental Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health and Health Professions are located here. New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Clinical and Research Institute on Addictions, and the Clinical and Translational Research Center are located on the Downtown Campus.

The university system was founded in 1948 by Governor Thomas E. Dewey, who signed a bill authorizing it as part of his agenda to promote a superior educational system. It was originally named The State University of New York when it opened in 1948. The acronym SUNY was adopted later that year, and it refers today to all 64 campuses throughout the state. The first classes were held in September 1948, nine months after Dewey’s death. SUNY is governed by a Board of Trustees with 24 members, six ex officio members, and 17 elected members.

SUNY Buffalo is a member of the Association of American Universities.
