Masters in Environmental Engineering Abroad

This course provides training in all aspects of the supply of clean water, the control of pollution and the protection of public health, waste water treatment, air pollution control and solid waste management. The problems of both industrialised and less developed countries are addressed in detail.

A close collaboration exists with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Water Research Centre. The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management meets regularly at the College, and students are encouraged to attend these meetings.

All of our MSc courses are career-orientated and cover both theoretical background and practical design considerations. Lectures are given mainly by full-time staff but important contributions are made by visiting professors and guest lecturers who are eminent industrialists.

Many of our students continue their studies to undertake research towards a PhD.

The degree is similar to our Earth Science BSc Honours, but includes a year of advanced study at master's level.

This fully accredited course is taught by experts from our Centre for Environmental Health and Engineering (CEHE). This sits within our Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is a designated World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Protection of Water Quality and Human Health.

Our course is increasingly popular and relevant to the needs of future engineers, scientists and professionals in environmental health, water quality, sanitation, water resource management, pollution control and other sectors. 

The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering includes required core courses from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, complemented by electives in civil and environmental engineering, mechanical and industrial engineering, earth and environmental sciences, and mathematics.

The MS in Environmental Engineering can be combined with a Gordon Engineering Leadership certificate. 

This program focuses on the fundamentals of green energy and illustrates how solar, wind and other clean sources can be efficiently integrated into power systems. Students will be trained in power engineering topics such as power electronic converters, machines, control coupled with modules related to renewable energy sources. The job market for green energy jobs continues to grow at a pace 12 times as fast as the U.S. economy, leaving employers looking to hire appropriately trained workers. Potential careers in this rapidly evolving area encompass industry sectors ranging from solar, wind and smart grid technologies.

Environmental engineering includes the design and operation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, managing biosolids and solid waste, as well as preventing pollution. Water resources engineering includes designing and maintaining stormwater facilities to manage both the quantity and quality of runoff. Facilities could include green roofs, permeable pavements, retention basins, infiltration basins and many more.

UND's master's in Environmental Engineering emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to environmental engineering. It includes the mitigation of environmental impacts from gaseous, liquid, and solid-phase emission sources. You'll work closely with industry, businesses and communities to develop new technologies and solve infrastructure-related problems.

The graduate and doctorate programs in environmental engineering are available with specializations in air pollution, hazardous and solid waste, subsurface contaminant hydrology, water resources, water and wastewater, and sustainability treatment. Environmental engineering is concerned with protecting human, animal, and plant populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors, including toxic chemicals and wastes, pathogenic bacteria, and global warming. Environmental engineers also try to minimize the effect of human activities on the physical and living environment so that we can all live more healthy and sustainable lives. This field builds on other branches of engineering, especially civil, chemical, and mechanical engineering. It also builds on information from many of the sciences, such as chemistry, physics, hydrology, geology, atmospheric science, and several specializations of biology (including ecology and microbiology) and public health. Students who elect to study environmental engineering will become familiar with many of these areas because maintaining and improving the environment requires a multidisciplinary approach.

The Lamar University Master of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering will teach you to use science and engineering principles to improve the environment and to clean polluted sites. 

In this program, you will learn about water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and public health issues as well as a knowledge of environmental engineering law. It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects. You'll be able to conduct hazardous-waste management studies to evaluate the significance of the such hazards, advise on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. You can design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems and be aware of local and worldwide environmental issues such as the effects of acid rain, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources.

In this rapidly changing and increasingly competitive technological world, graduate degrees are highly desirable and most often master’s degrees are required to hold higher-level professional environmental engineering positions in the industry, and in federal, state and municipal government agencies. The department’s graduate programs are designed to educate the technological leaders of the future in environmental engineering, and are structured to accommodate both full-time and part-time students. The specialty areas in environmental engineering include water quality, water and wastewater treatment, hydrologic processes, water resources, environmental engineering microbiology, air quality, hazardous and solid waste, biofuels, nutrient cycling, and pollution prevention. The MEng in Environmental Engineering focuses on the design and implementation of waste management technologies, including water, wastewater and air treatment processes. Many communities now recognize the importance of sustainable engineering and are seeking to upgrade treatment facilities, capture greenhouse gases and improve environmental impact assessment tools. Students will gain a deeper understanding of environmental problems and regulations from both a national and global perspective. As Concordia houses the local secretariat of the United Nation’s program for global sustainability, students are trained to be at the forefront of sustainable development practices. Beyond the classroom, MEng students have the opportunity to conduct research in various domains of Environmental Engineering. They can also benefit from the Concordia Institute for Water, Energy and Sustainable Systems (CIWESS), which promotes research on new systems, technologies and solutions for water, energy and resource conservation.
