The Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Software Engineering) is an undergraduate coursework program that will give you knowledge of how to design and develop computer games, business applications, operating systems and network control systems. This course is accredited by Engineers Australia and other major professional engineering institutions.

You will complete degree foundational core units in mathematics and computing, along with a suite of multidisciplinary project units. You will also complete stream core and specialist elective units in software engineering, and can choose to complete an optional specialisation.

Additionally, you will complete elective units as needed to make up the requirements of the course from either the Engineering disciplinary pool or the shared pool. In your final year, you will complete an honours thesis in software engineering.

While the core mathematics courses are the same, the specific degree requirements vary. A bachelor of science in mathematics requires a 30-hour concentration from the natural sciences: biology, chemistry, physics & astronomy, or computer information science. A bachelor of art requires modern language study and more hours from the humanities and social sciences.

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Software Development is a degree to provide a solid foundation of software development skills. It consists mainly of 45 credit hours of computer science classes: the core computer science classes, plus several additional computer science courses selected so as to have greatest practical applicability. The degree will qualify students for mid-level programming jobs with good long-term prospects but not necessarily technical leadership roles.

The program will appeal to students who largely complete a major, but realize that they need a different major in order to secure a good job. The program is also designed for individuals who have graduated from college, but find it necessary to be retrained in software development in order to enhance long-term employment prospects. For students who already have a baccalaureate degree, they can complete the computer science portion of the program in five to six semesters, depending on the desired course load.
