The Automotive Engineering BEng (Hons) programme will equip you with the practical skills and expertise required for a successful career as a practising automotive engineer, with the full educational basis to facilitate progression to engineering management roles.

You will have the opportunity to explore contemporary automotive engineering through a variety of modules and project-based work, with an optional year in industry during your third year. You will be taught and assisted by a well-rounded team of experienced practitioners, leading researchers, and a knowledgeable technical support team. Equipped with industry standard lab facilities, the course will provide you with an exciting and practical learning experience to apply engineering principles to real-world problems. 

The mission of Automotive Engineering Technology (AET) is to provide a broad-based education for graduates to enter globally competitive automotive careers to serve the citizens of Minnesota and the world by:

• providing the highest quality education to prepare application-oriented graduates for a broad range of career opportunities in product research, design, development, and technical sales environments;
• encouraging and supporting faculty and students to engage in scholarly research and activities through partnerships with government, industry, and other constituencies that support effective and ethical transfer of technology;
• providing access to state of the art equipment, facilities, and methodologies, along with faculty expertise to benefit AET students; and
• broadening access to the program for diverse populations and support of K-12 pipeline development.

Check out our Automotive Engineering Design Concentration as part of your Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree program. You will gain greater insight into automotive engineering with courses including engine design, vehicle performance, transmission design and chassis design.

You will also have the opportunity to work closely with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) on competition teams such as Formula SAE and BajaSAE.

This is a sample plan of study with a suggested sequencing of classes for the major.  University electives may be applied to earn additional academic majors, minors, or certificates.  Students should regularly meet with their academic advisor to plan their specific semester schedule to include UNIFI/General Education program and/or university elective hours required.

The Bachelor of Science in Automotive Engineering Technology concentrates on engineering skills required by the automotive industry. Students receive hands-on laboratory experience in engineering processes, mechanical testing, metallurgy, emission, and dynamometer testing. In addition, an on-the-job engineering internship is an important part of the program.

The instruction prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of engineers and other professionals engaged in developing, manufacturing and testing self-propelled ground vehicles and their systems. Other subjects studied include vehicular systems technology, design, and development testing, instrument calibration, test equipment operation and maintenance, and report preparation.
