History of Northern Arizona University
The school celebrated its rebirth in 1925 as Northern Arizona State Teachers College, a four-year university that was authorized to award bachelor's degrees in education.
NASTC changed its name to Arizona State Teachers College [ASTC] at Flagstaff on July 1, 1929. Arizona State College saw extraordinary expansion in the 1950s. In addition to master's degrees in the arts and sciences, students might also become education specialists.
With the founding of the Forestry department in 1958 and a surge in research efforts, the path to university status was set in motion.
ASC's rising student body and wide range of high-quality academic offerings led the Arizona Board of Regents to suggest that it become Northern Arizona University on May 1, 1966.
NAU was granted permission to start awarding Doctorates in Philosophy and Education in 1968. In 1973, the first doctoral candidates received their degrees.
