Zoology is the science of animals and you will study the whole diversity of animal life, from tardigrades to elephants. You'll gain in-depth knowledge of how animals work, develop key lab skills in molecular biology, physiology, and cell biology that are sought after by employers and build fieldwork skills on two residential field trips.You'll also gain the expertise and skills to be a professional zoologist and work across a diverse range of professions or go on to further study.

Our research has global impact on the planet and the people on it, which makes for a wide choice of final-year projects, with particular specialisms in the evolution of behaviour and the monitoring, management, and conservation of wildlife.

Our majors are designed with future employability in mind, and we offer a range of multidisciplinary minors to extend and broaden your expertise. You can choose to major in applied zoology, natural history, animal ecology, or palaeobiology, and complement your study with minors including science communication, water science, museum studies, botany, spatial science, natural history, and zoological methods.

We have a strong research culture underpinned by high research training standards. Our research in zoology, as well as in many other specific fields of scientific research including ecology, evolutionary biology and genetics, is world class.

The academic staff of our zoology department are internationally recognised experts in their fields with many years of experience working with various types of animals. Their experience and research are incorporated into the teaching material in all units of our zoology course.

UNE's Armidale campus is surrounded by a range of landscapes and ecosystems including rainforests, coastal forests, semi-arid savannah, and freshwater environments that range from sub-tropical coastal ecosystems at sea-level to sub-alpine forests and woodlands at more than 1500m above sea level. Our close proximity to these diverse habitats provides easy access for field trips in which you will gain hands-on experience in zoology.

Whether you study zoology online or on campus, you will have opportunities to participate in fieldwork in our local area and internationally. UNE is the proud caretaker of the Newholme Field Station on the forested slopes of Mount Duval, providing an outdoor classroom with koalas, greater gliders and freshwater turtles on our doorstep. Our study tours visit locations such as Botswana in Africa, and Bhutan in the Himalayas of Asia. Local field trips vary from half-day excursions to week-long residential trips, while international study tours are several weeks in duration.

UNE's Natural History Museum, established in 1969, represents one of the largest collections of natural history specimens in New South Wales, and showcases the breadth of zoological sciences and natural history that enhances the learning experience. Students in the Bachelor of Zoology have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working behind the scenes cataloguing the museum’s significant zoological collection.

• Examine animal distribution, management, classification, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.
• Hone your research skills by completing ERS381 Project Report in Environmental and Rural Science as a capstone unit for your chosen major.
• Put your research skills into practice with hands-on laboratory work and field trips in a diverse range of natural habitats that are easily accessible from Armidale.
• Participate in international field trips to Africa and the Himalayas.
• Choose from a range of other units relating to botany, environmental science, geology, and animal production to customise your learning to meet your own goals.
• Progress to an Honours year with UNE's Bachelor of Science with Honours (Zoology) if you have an above average academic record and wish to continue with your studies.

Our BSc (Hons) Zoology degree provides a mixture of theoretical and applied science. You will learn about physiology and molecular biology and then will have the opportunity to apply this learning to a range of real-world environmental, conservation or animal behaviour questions both in the laboratory and in the field.

Study zoology at Manchester Met and you’ll also have the option to study in Europe, North America or Australasia, giving you the opportunity to expand your horizons and spend the third year at a university overseas. Alternatively, you have the option of spending your third year working on a placement in industry or at a relevant non-governmental organisation (NGO), before returning to Manchester for the final year of your course.

Our programme will give you an overview of modern zoological thinking, with a strong emphasis on the underlying concepts that shape our understanding of animal diversity.

The zoology major is a gateway to the diverse areas of modern biology. The major can be tailored to prepare students for advanced study and careers in many different areas: health professions and public health; law; life sciences research in university, government, and industrial settings; education including museum, nature center, secondary school, and college teaching; biotechnology; and environmental studies.

Specialized preparation is offered in ecology, systematics, limnology, morphology, molecular biology, cellular biology, developmental biology, genetics, neurobiology, physiology, evolution, and behavior. Several possible areas, emphasizing different interests, are outlined in the requirements tab. They include ecology, evolution, and behavior; anatomy, physiology, and organismal biology; and cellular, molecular, and developmental biology. The department encourages undergraduate participation in research and offers summer research scholarships to outstanding students.

Zoology is a major branch of the biological sciences that involves the study of animals. Study in this area focuses on organismal diversity, animal structures and their functions, genetics, development, evolution, behavior, and ecological interactions. Occupations that may be available to graduates include: Animal Husbandry, Museum/Zoo Guide, Animal Laboratory Technician, Animal Trainer, Pest Control Technician, Museum Curator, Entomologist, Environmental Consultant, Field Researcher, Science Writer, Physician, Veterinarian, Wildlife Rehabilitator, Zoo Keeper, and Zoologist. Advanced training in professional or graduate schools is required in many of these areas and acceptance for advanced training is competitive. Success in this career field typically requires: a thorough knowledge of general biology, the ability to work and relate with animals, proficiency in reading and writing and the ability to collect and analyze data, and an interest in problem solving and decision making.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Zoology builds from the common background of the biology core curriculum to provide ample time for third- and fourth-year students to concentrate in specialized disciplines such as marine and freshwater biology, behavior, cell and developmental biology, ecology, evolution, fisheries, physiology, and neurobiology while giving students the foundation from which they can specialize in the area of zoology. Undergraduate students are encouraged to conduct field or lab-based research which helps determine advanced education disciplines for graduate studies.  Many students ultimately work in the government, environmental agencies, education as well as agricultural, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries, where they conduct advanced research and/or teaching.  Zoology majors had the second highest income and lowest unemployment rate according to data from the 2016  U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

A traditional program with a hands-on approach, our bachelor’s degree in wildlife, sustainability and ecosystem sciences meets the academic and professional needs of our undergraduate students in a diverse and ever-changing natural resources field. As in other fields of biology, recent developments in environmental studies, biotechnological research techniques, medicine, and related areas make the study of zoology important and fascinating. These areas are expected to continue growing and to affect our society in many ways and at many levels. Graduates of our Zoology program pursue various careers, depending on their interest, level of educational attainment, and subsequent professional education. Among the more typical career areas are scientific research and development, human and veterinary medicine, environmental monitoring and regulation at state and federal levels, and private design and consulting.

The Zoology option in Biology provides a broad background of knowledge and experience in animal classification, physiology, anatomy, and ecology. Advanced
coursework is available in ornithology (study of birds), entomology (study of insects), mammalogy (study of mammals), herpetology (study of reptiles and
amphibians), ichthyology (study of fish), invertebrate zoology, marine mammalogy, parasitology (study of parasites), and freshwater biology.
