Biomedical Engineering (MEng) at Toronto Metropolitan University

The B.S. in Engineering Innovation and Leadership program (BSEIL) offers a rigorous and flexible major in Engineering with in-depth study of leadership and its effect upon engineering and society.  The program includes concentrations in UTEP engineering fields.  The Engineering Innovation and Leadership program and its associated concentrations meet the curricular accreditation requirements of the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET using the criteria for General Engineering.

Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines biology and engineering, applying engineering principles and materials to medicine and healthcare. From developing and improving new machinery, such as robotic surgery equipment, to creating better and more reliable replacement limbs, the work of biomedical engineers is helping to pave the way for new methods of treating injuries and diseases.

This research-informed programme aims to develop industry-ready graduates with product design and innovative sense who are highly skilled and creative biomedical engineers, able to adapt to new challenges and deliver sustainable solutions for modern society.

Project-based learning is a key feature of the programme and students can undertake group product design and development projects in the first and second years. Students will also have the opportunity to design and develop a working medical device.

The master of science in biomedical engineering provides a foundation for a highly trained work force to become leaders who support economic development, industry, and academia.

Biomedical engineering integrates science with biology and medicine to solve clinical problems. Biomedical engineers are involved in the development of many types of medical procedures and devices such as prosthesis, pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, dialysis machines, and MRI imaging systems. They also take part in biomedical research and the development of biomaterials, bioelectronics, and biomechanics, including tissue generation and bioengineering blood vessels and organs.
