Criminology and Social Justice (MA) at Toronto Metropolitan University

Our Criminology MA will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the complex nature of crime, harm and victimisation, together with an appreciation of the role of criminal justice systems in relation to crime control, protection and the delivery of justice.

This course will develop your critical thinking skills whilst also providing you with the tools to undertake rigorous, high quality criminological research. Through a theoretical and applied lens, you will gain a broad understanding of criminological issues and debates. For example, you will question why particular behaviours and populations are criminalised and you will challenge local and global responses to crime. You will develop a range of transferable skills sought after by employers in the field.

This course is designed for those who have a social science, socio-legal or policy studies background and who want to develop their knowledge further. The course is open to those who have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant area, and, or, to those whose background is characterised by practitioner experience at an appropriate level in a relevant field.

This Criminology with Forensic Psychology MA programme enables you to combine two complementary subject areas.

The criminology elements will introduce you to the complex nature of crime, harm and victimisation, together with an appreciation of the role of criminal justice systems in relation to crime control, protection and the delivery of justice.

In the forensic psychology component of the programme you will study a range of investigative and legal processes, policing and geographical profiling. You will engage critically with offender profiling and explore the practice of Behavioural Investigative Advice (BIA) in the UK.

This course is designed for those who have a social science, socio-legal or policy studies background and who want to develop their knowledge further. The course is open to those who have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant area, and, or, to those whose background is characterised by practitioner experience at an appropriate level in a relevant field.

Note: If you are interested in becoming a practising psychologist you should undertake the MSc in Forensic Psychology as this programme is BPS-accredited

Our Criminal Investigation and Policing Studies course can teach you the skills to become a professional practitioner in the public or private policing sector. 

This programme is the ideal choice if you’re interested in studying policing or criminal investigation but do not necessarily wish to pursue a career in the police service. This provides opportunities for you to pursue a career as an investigator or intelligence officer in other law enforcement agencies.

Taught by policing and criminology academics with substantial experience of criminal justice practice, in the first year you will get an introduction to criminology and the profession of policing, as well as learn how to research in the crime and justice sector and gain an understanding of the criminal justice system. In years two and three, you will study topics covering the leadership and management of contemporary issues in policing, research for effective practice and multi-agency working, as well as complete a dissertation on a subject of your own choice. Both years will have a bespoke progressive investigation taught module, which is designed to develop your critical understanding of operational and critical incident investigations within public and private law enforcement agencies and within the Criminal Justice System.
