Masters in Language Abroad

The Master of English Studies is designed for research students from Australia and overseas, secondary school teachers and those interested in studying English literature at an advanced level.

Through the course you will bring together contemporary critical theory with literary narratives and investigate how and why literature still enjoys particular resonance in the 21st century. You will consider the ways in which the study of literature works in a specifically Australian cultural context.

This course focuses on three core approaches:

• critical reading
• literary history
• literary comparison (including the question of English as a world literature)
   

This international double master's program enables you to complete the requirements of the Monash Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies (MITS), as well as a second degree with one of the partner universities.

France - Jean Moulin Lyon III (Specialising in business and legal translation, French)
Japan - Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (Specialising in interpreting and translation/Japanese)

In each case, you will study one year at Monash University in Australia and one year at the partner university. On successful completion of the academic program at Monash and the academic program at the partner university, you will be eligible to graduate with the degrees from both institutions, awarded separately.

This MA explores language from a wide range of perspectives. It is designed to develop understanding of key concepts and issues related to applied linguistics and engage students in the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world situations, contexts and issues in which language plays a crucial role, while also exploring language education globally.

In the DPhil in Medieval and Modern Languages programme, students complete a major piece of original research. Supervision is offered in most fields from medieval and early modern literature and culture through to modern and contemporary literature, film and cultural history. 

Our Language & Cultural Diversity MA examines the complex relationship between language and cultural diversity, and will equip you with an advanced knowledge of the major approaches to linguistic aspects of culture. Through the course you will develop the research skills and knowledge to support further study in empirical and applied linguistics.

French is a major world language, while the languages of the Scandinavian countries have had a considerable impact beyond the Nordic region.

On this joint programme you will study French and one, or more, of the following Scandinavian languages:

• Swedish
• Danish
• Norwegian

You will acquire near-native fluency in your chosen languages, thanks to four years of intensive training, including a year abroad. You will also study the languages in the context of the rich cultures of the countries in which they are spoken.

We offer a wide range of cultural courses spanning from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, including specialist options on literature, history, and film taught by leading experts in their field.

Warwick's MA by Research in German Studies is expertly designed by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, to hone your research skills. The School has created a vibrant research community engaged in the diversity of the German language culture.

Our Masters in Translation Studies is recognised all over the world for its academic quality, its innovative approach to translation, and its relevance. Designed for anyone interested in languages and education and the role of languages in society, this course covers a very broad field and will appeal to those working in language teaching and learning, both internationally and nationally, whether teaching English as a foreign language/second language, or teaching second or foreign languages. It will also appeal to those fascinated by the world of linguistics and sociolinguistics.

The Five-Year Master Plan is a pathway to earning two powerful credentials, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a Master of Arts (MA) degree, in just five years. The BA/MA program in English is designed to provide a clear path for New Paltz students majoring in English Liberal Arts or Creative Writing to complete the MA degree in one year. Students in this program begin taking graduate courses during their senior year earning ten credits of graduate course work by the time they complete their BA degree. They are then able to complete the MA degree requirements by enrolling in ten credits during the subsequent fall and spring terms.

Students may pursue the Master of Science in French (Secondary Teaching) or the Master of Science Community College Track in French. The Department of World Languages & Cultures offers graduate courses in French for the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT in French) degree. The MAT program is designed for those who want to teach at the secondary level but lack certification. 

The WSU English Department offers three master’s degrees and one graduate certificate program.

Our graduate programs will also provide you with rigorous coursework in pedagogy and literary studies, composition and rhetoric, and language.

The Department of Educational Studies offers a certificate program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), which is designed to meet the needs of students desiring to teach English in a variety of settings throughout the world. Specialized coursework in the certificate program focuses on theories and methodologies of TESOL while providing practical classroom experience. The coursework may also be used to satisfy some of the requirements for the Master of Science in Education (M.S. Ed.) in Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies for those students admitted into the M.S. Ed. program.

In the Master of Arts program, you'll explore a variety of approaches to the study of literature, language and writing to develop your abilities as a critic, writer and teacher. Courses offer in-depth study in the areas of:

Linguistics is a highly interdisciplinary field which combines research methods from the humanities and the social, natural, and mathematical sciences.

Research in the Department covers a broad range of topics, with substantial coverage of syntax, semantics, morphology, phonetics, phonology, and pragmatics. We approach these topics from several different research traditions and backgrounds, with particular strengths in formal-theoretical linguistics, experimental and field linguistics, acquisition, and computational approaches to the study of communicative behaviour. These research areas intersect and overlap considerably, and faculty and students are often simultaneously involved in more than one area. This is part of the attention paid to interfaces between traditional subfields of linguistics and methodological traditions (e.g., laboratory phonology, gesture and speech and learning), one of the great strengths of the Department.

The Master of Arts in English affords students the flexibility to tailor their course of study to meet their individual wishes and professional goals. This highly versatile program offers courses in three areas of emphasis—literary studies, cultural studies, and professional and academic writing.  The English MA has a pathway for students to complete the program remotely.  We offer on-line asynchronous courses, on-line synchronous courses, and in-person courses with the opportunity for remote students to attend through Zoom.

The Department of English and Film Studies (EFS) offers graduate work leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in English language, literature, and culture.

Research in EFS embraces a wide array of scholarly explorations dedicated to the understanding, elucidation, and production of literary and cultural texts, broadly conceived. Scholars in EFS engage in ground-breaking research across four broad zones of inquiry: literary history, print culture, critical and cultural theory, and screen cultures.

The University's libraries hold the equivalent of nearly 9,000,000 volumes, ranking second in Canada and in the top twenty in North America, and subscribe to over 100,000 electronic journals, and to 1100 databases. Over 100,000 rare books, and significant archival material, are held in the Special Collections.

The Master of Arts degree in English is designed for students who desire the challenge of an intense study of literature. Graduates of the program will have a critical appreciation of literature, a thorough knowledge of scholarly tools and the preparation necessary to become competent writers and teachers of writing. The degree requires a total of 36 semester hours of graduate-level courses in English.

Students in the program receive substantial individual attention from faculty. There are opportunities for students to do research and publish on their own or with faculty, as well as opportunities for meeting important scholars and writers at both on-campus and off-campus conferences and events. In addition, graduate assistants gain valuable professional experience as editors, scholars or instructors.
