Bachelors in Literature Abroad

Benefit from studying Classics from a wide variety of angles – exploring literature, philosophy, religion, archaeology and ancient history. The Classics (Greek & Latin) BA embraces the study of all aspects of the cultures of Greece and Rome by developing your skills in Ancient Greek and Latin languages. If you have no prior knowledge of either Ancient Greek or Latin, you can still join this programme as we offer innovative pathways to support your rapid acquisition of practical skills in these languages, allowing you to reach an advanced level by Year 3. Students who join another programme in the Classics Department at King's and take Ancient Greek and Latin language modules in Year 1 (they need to have some knowledge of one ancient language already, as they cannot take two beginners’ modules) have the option to transfer to the Classics BA in Year 2, provided that they attain an overall result of over 70% in one of these two language modules.

A degree in a classical subject offers a rich and versatile training. It will help you to develop advanced skills in critical analysis, communication and creative thinking.

This course lets you pursue your interest in the languages, literature and thought of Greece and Rome, while considering the broader cultural, social and political contexts of the classical world. You will spend your third year studying abroad at one of our partner universities.

The Classics degree is language-focused, although how much language is studied and at what level depends upon you. The course is designed to be equally suitable for students who have A-levels (or equivalent) in Greek and/or Latin and for students with no experience in one or both languages. We offer modules in both Latin and Greek, in prose and verse, at every level, from complete beginner to very advanced, and you will be able to take modules which are appropriate to your level of language experience and (at Advanced and Higher levels) your particular interests in the subject.

We seek to foster your love of literature and the creative arts, including film and theatre, so you graduate with a real understanding and appreciation of the subject area. You'll have the opportunity to study texts from Old English to the present day, and you'll be invited to participate in new research areas such as Animal Studies and the Environmental Humanities.

Our core module in the first year, Renaissance to Revolution, is the starting point for the chronological study of literature which is central to our Sheffield degree. You'll be able to choose from a wide selection of optional modules, including Studying Theatre, Introduction to Cinema, Creative Writing and Early Englishes. As well as representing the varied areas of study available within the School, all first year modules provide degree-level study skills to help you expand your knowledge and develop as a scholar.

The BA in Literature equips students with a well-rounded background in British, American, and world literatures, as well as an introduction to critical theory. The program prepares graduates for a wide range of professions, including careers in education, publishing and editing, marketing, law, and administration.

The English Studies emphasis in the English major is for students who want to design their own major within the English Department. If one of our other emphases doesn't quite meet the goals you have for your degree, you can work with a faculty mentor in the English Department to plan a program that will. That means you can choose your own combination of literary study, creative writing, professional writing, and language study. With your mentor, you'll figure out which courses work for your goals and why, and explore special options like independent study to help customize your English major.

UVU’s English program is designed to give students skill, confidence, and versatility in writing, speaking, and interpreting texts. The program provides opportunities for students to consider and practice the applications of effective language use in diverse situations: professional, pragmatic, social, political, and aesthetic. The English program emphasizes knowledge and use of standard English in all written work, yet incorporates an understanding that English is a desirably diverse and variable phenomenon. The courses of study in English are designed to familiarize students with much of the traditional canon of literature. They are also designed to provide students with the critical and ethical skills necessary to interrogate this canon, to incorporate and legitimize their own and others’ “different” voices, not just in the academy, but in any of the many situations in which language influences human activity.

The Department of English offers the sequence of courses in composition required of all students, literature, drama, and film courses which fulfill the Humanities and Multicultural Studies requirements of the University General Education Curriculum, a major and minor in English, a comprehensive major in English Teacher Education, minors in Creative Writing, Film, and Professional Writing, and electives in advanced writing and creative writing. It also participates in interdisciplinary programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Environmental Studies, Queer Studies, and Women Studies. Although the departments offerings are diverse, critical writing, reading, and thinking developed by active engagement with and participation in the related discourses of literature, film, creative, and expository writing are the constant emphases. The department prepares its graduates to perform successfully in graduate and professional schools and in the many fields in which clear thinking and effective self-expression are valued.

The curriculum of the East Asian Studies major consists of a balanced mixture of language and area studies. All majors must study an East Asian language during their time at Hopkins. They also have the opportunity to choose from a rich menu of content courses dealing with East Asia. 

In addition to solid language training and content courses about the region, EAS majors receive training in the methods and theory of the particular academic discipline they select as a focus area. Students select from among four discipline-based focus areas - history, political science, history of science and technology, or sociology - or create an individualized focus area. Possible individualized focus areas include art history, archaeology, or business. The individualized focus area requires consultation and approval of the program director.

If they choose, East Asian Studies majors may double major in International Studies, as the requirements of each of the four focus areas overlap with those of International Studies. Students may also find it convenient to double major in history, political science, sociology, or history of science, medicine and technology.

Learn about the culture, history, and mythology of the ancient Greek and Roman World, explore world religions in a comparative context, and investigate the history and material culture of the ancient Near East and ancient Egypt.

The program prepares students for careers in teaching as well as literary and linguistic scholarship; it also provides a background for a number of challenging professions.

Southern Utah University offers both a minor and a bachelor's degree program in English. The following emphases are available on both the minor and the bachelor's degree: Creative Writing, Literature, Secondary Education. In addition, a composite degree in Secondary Education/Creative Writing is available for English majors. The members of the faculty in the Department of English help students choose between various career paths such as writing the next great American novel, educating young minds, or becoming a Corporate Communications Specialist.

Through a combination of language courses and a variety of content courses in areas such as pre-modern and modern literature, culture and linguistics, students not only learn to communicate effectively in an additional language, but also to think analytically about the cultures of East Asia. An appreciation of the dynamics of cultural difference is a vital skill for learning and working in the increasingly global community.

As a literature major, you’ll combine liberal arts coursework with real-world learning. You’ll study the masters – such as Chaucer and Shakespeare – and span American, British and world literatures. You’ll gain the textual and cultural literacy, the attention to detail, and the writing ability so sought after by both nonprofit and for–profit employers. You’ll also get the chance to write and edit for University publications such as Polaris, ONU’s undergraduate creative writing magazine and The Northern Review, ONU’s newspaper.

The B.A. in English with a concentration in Literature allows students to explore their own literary and linguistic heritage and to become acquainted with representative works of major world writers. We offer a wide range of courses in English, American, multicultural, and international literature. Courses in critical theory and the history and structure of the language help students sharpen their analytical faculties, encourage clarity of thought and expression, and stimulate and develop the critical and creative imagination. The degree in literature develops critical thinkers and effective communicators, people whose skills are applicable in a wide range of careers including education, publishing, writing, information and research, media, politics and public service. Classics is the study of languages, culture, history, and thought of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome. Through this major, you will develop strong analytical and communication skills. The major also has an option for teaching if you would like to teach Latin. As a Classics student, you’ll study:

Rice English integrates creative and critical practice through training in close reading, analytical writing, cultural history and theory, and craft/form. Our faculty research and pedagogy cover the breadth of the study of British and American literatures and cultures ranging from the medieval era to the present. The curriculum emphasizes literature and literary history, race and ethnicity studies, feminist and gender studies, queer theory and the history of sexuality, visual culture and comparative media studies, and the Anglophone literature of the postcolonial world. Faculty have particular strengths in the newer interdisciplinary areas of medical humanities, ecocriticism, post-humanism, and environmental humanities. Recent research and writing in the public humanities innovates the departmental mission as faculty and students engage new audiences. Rice English is also home to a vibrant creative writing concentration offering a range of courses in fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction.
