This practical programme allows you to develop strong creative design capabilities as well as scientific and engineering knowledge and skills. Our students don’t just apply their skills and knowledge to solve problems. They are creative designers, who step back and question why a problem exists and discover users that have been overlooked.

The programme is built around the core Design Studio modules – tutorial-style sessions where you are encouraged to think and develop as an independent designer, supported by visiting professionals.

These modules will be supported by fundamental engineering concepts and skills taught through our core engineering and materials modules such as ‘Engineering Design’ and ‘Designing for Manufacture’. Our modern programmes will also expand the computational and creative coding confidence of our students with new modules including ‘Computational Mathematical Modelling’, ‘Arts Application Programming’ and ‘Interactive Media Design & Production’.

Students who choose to take the MEng degree will carry out a further ambitious individual project in the fourth year, experiencing product development from inception to realisation. You’ll also take advanced engineering and materials modules that provide background knowledge for the project.

During the course you will study key game design principles and theories that underpin the development of successful games. You will learn practical skills in game prototyping, UI design, level design, game testing and game narrative techniques. The Game Development and Emerging Media program is uniquely interdisciplinary; you will graduate with unmatched experience and a highly marketable résumé and portfolio. Rooted in collaborative practice, the major enables the development of immersive and novel interactive experiences across disciplinary lines, in partnership with faculty and students across the University campus. 

For example, students in Game Development team with students majoring in pharmacology to create a serious game to model patient interventions. Students in Game Development collaborate with those majoring in hospitality to author simulations that explore cognitive empathy in accessible tourism. In other instances, students develop immersive simulations for a criminal justice course in police tactical decision-making; interactive data visualizations in a public relations course in crisis communications; virtual environments that allow premedical students to practice clinical skills; or author interactive forms of expanded cinema and volumetric filmmaking.   

The program offers a unique blend of both the hard and soft skills that employers prize. In our Computer Gaming concentration program, you will learn how to do this and more by studying the technology, science and art involved in the creation of computer games.

Your coursework will include types of intelligence, goal-based systems, heuristic search and games, hill climbing algorithms, constraint propagation, first order logic and inference, knowledge representation, expert systems and learning systems.

The program features access to four state-of-the-art labs: Computer Networks Lab, Computer and Network Security Lab, Computer System Lab and Microcomputers I and II Labs.

Students in this concentration receive a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

Split between The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences, this interdisciplinary program is for ambitious students who want to work in the highly competitive gaming industry, or similar fields. 

This demanding program requires you to tap into your computer science and digital design skills. Our approach is project-based. You'll build your communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. All the while gaining hands-on experience with digital games, mobile apps, websites, simulations, and more. Learn about specific tools and processes used within the game creating world. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Game Design program is a project-focused, multi-disciplinary degree program, with a focus on game system design, level design, and game assembly. The Game Design program curriculum employs an industry-applicable approach that includes art asset creation and integration, defining narrative, storytelling, and collaborative development practices between artists and programmers. During their time at LTU, game art students take several Integrated Game Studios, which act as a platform for professional practice, bringing together the University's disciplines in order to produce and release games within the curriculum itself. Throughout the program, students are challenged to develop critical thinking skills as they visually communicate concepts, analyze industry trends, and apply design principles and patterns to their work that is encouraged to be focused on their individual talents and interests in the multi-faceted field.

ODU’s Game Design, Development, and Criticism degree is an interdisciplinary major that allows students to specialize in game programming or game design while also learning game scholarship. Our program features a fundamentally entrepreneurial and multi perspectival approach to game studies and gaming, one that is designed to not only teach students the core principles of game development, design, and scholarship, but also to help them understand how to adapt these principles in response to changes in technology, the market, or culture. In doing so, this degree aims to prepare students for careers in both the mainstream and independent gaming industry, in the growing academic field of game studies, or in any number of other related fields.
