This course has been specifically designed for those wishing build a career in the expansive and creative field of television and film making.

The emphasis of the course is on the creation of new work from early ideas to production. You will learn though practice and engage with programme design, concept and ideas development, film making, Studio production and Broadcast television. You will experience contemporary film and television within a wider media context including the artistic and ethical considerations faced as a programme and film maker.

The course opens up a number of opportunities and the final year is focussed on progression to the next stage of your chosen career pathway. You will have the opportunity to embark on a number of production projects and connect with the industry for example through entering your work for the Royal Television Society Awards, which is a gala event attracting key industry professionals from the world of film and television or, should you prefer, you could progress onto a more academic career path via Masters and PhD in related subject areas.

You’ll learn to tell stories in an inventive and meaningful way, within a specialist facility, working with industry professionals. A focus on narrative, craft and practical making, alongside critical thinking, will help you develop the skills needed to succeed in the fast moving television industry.

Our three-year Journalism, Media and Culture degree focuses on developing your writing, production and communication skills across a range of platforms. You'll be well prepared for a career in a fast-changing media environment as a proactive journalist or media professional. 

This hands-on degree programme ensures you develop the practical skills critical in multimedia journalism, as well as an in-depth academic knowledge across all aspects of journalism and media theory.

Screenwriting is a multi-million-pound industry and is the foundation of all film, TV, theatre, and radio production. This screenwriting bachelor degree will help prepare you for a career as a professional scriptwriter. You'll learn a range of scriptwriting disciplines, whilst mirroring industry practices.

You will graduate with a portfolio of work. This portfolio includes a feature length "calling card" script, showcasing your work to agents and producers.

The Sports Media Emphasis is a new and exciting program at BHSU. This program combines class work from the Communication field, such as Newswriting, Audio Production and Sports Broadcasting, with courses related to athletics and coaching.

With this degree, students will be able to pursue careers in sports information, journalism, broadcasting, photojournalism, and advertising as well as opportunities to continue their education in graduate school.

Through sequenced study in Convergence Journalism, Digital Media & Telecommunication, Film & Video Production, and Public Relations, students are educated and trained across media industries to meet the demands of a complex, technological media landscape and multicultural society. Here you will learn the skills needed to launch your career in the electronic media/broadcasting field. The EM/B curriculum provides a well-rounded introduction to the history, principles and practices of digital media production.

As an EM/B student, you will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of the digital storytelling process — from idea development to finished work. Before you graduate, you will create digital media content and an online portfolio to showcase your work.

Opportunities for practical and applied production experience include student-run media outlets 90.5 WASU-FM, known as “The App”; AppTV; The Appalachian newspaper organization; and The Peel Literature and Arts Review.

The 120-credit Bachelor of Fine Arts in Broadcasting opens students to the world of digital radio, digital video, webcasting and multimedia. This major prepares students for careers as varied as documentary producers, television writers, web video producers, news anchors, writers, radio broadcasters, and interview hosts. Courses cover the technical and creative aspects of this field, including new technologies, digital audio and video production and editing as well as narrative development and cultural dimensions of media. Students will work behind the scenes, writing scripts for broadcasts and operating television and radio equipment, and also practice on-air skills through work at LIU Post’s TV station, PTV, and radio station, WCWP. Students develop an understanding of a variety of storytelling styles and formats in both radio and television. LIU Post students intern at some of the nation’s top media organizations, including CBS, MTV Networks, NBC TV, Z-100, WBAB, W WFAN Radio, HGTV, and News 12, Long Island.

Broadcasting is the delivery of audio and video program content via radio and television. This definition is just the tip of the iceberg of how news and entertainment transmission takes place today. In our Broadcasting concentration, we focus on the “how” of news and entertainment – how video and audio images are captured, edited and transmitted, and how effective and meaningful ones are written and created in the first place. Broadcasting training is applicable from documentaries to television sitcoms, from podcasting to All Things Considered. It is CBS and Netflix, Anderson Cooper and Big Bang Theory.

The major in Broadcasting (reference number 726) requires a minimum of 45 semester hours and leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree. Students must take a minimum of 72 semester hours in courses outside of the School of Media unit, including the University’s general education requirements.

In addition to meeting institutional requirements for graduation, the Broadcasting major must have a minor or second major outside of the School of Media and Film Studies that is approved by the major faculty advisor. Students may not select a minor in film studies or from those offered within the School, unless taken as a second minor.

No course with a grade of “D” or below may be counted toward this major or used as a prerequisite. One-half of the hours in the major must be at the 300- or 400-level. Only 3 hours of internship or co-op may be counted within the major. One-hour workshops may be repeated in different topics up to 4 hours. Only 3 hours of workshop credit may be counted within the 45-hour major.
