Because Roswell Park is a cancer research hospital, students have a wide spectrum of choices for their research focus, from the basic investigation of cancer mechanisms, to translational/clinical research with direct relevance to disease treatment.

This specialization is designed for students who wish to become medical technologists certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Medical technologists should have a firm understanding of the theory behind the diagnostic tests they perform in the clinical laboratory.

Their responsibilities encompass all clinical laboratory disciplines, such as clinical chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, immunology, blood and organ banking, microbiology, parasitology, and nuclear medicine. As self-motivated, inquisitive scientists, medical technologists contribute to the development of new methods and laboratory instrumentation that aid physicians in preventing and curing disease. Most medical technologists are employed in hospitals, but private laboratories, physicians' offices, government agencies, industrial and pharmaceutical laboratories, and university research programs offer growing opportunities for employment advancements.

Molecular and Cellular Biology has evolved in recent years as a response to the increased ability to study organisms at the molecular level. This discipline involves the systematic study of the molecular and structural basis for the organization, transmission and expression of genetic information, in addition to the general study of macromolecular systems involved in the structure and function of cellular components. Recent years have seen explosive advances in the study of DNA and molecular genetics including gene cloning, sequencing and mapping. Developments in recombinant DNA technology have opened up entirely new areas of study and provided powerful techniques that are revolutionizing the pharmaceutical, health and agricultural industries and have spawned new industries in biotechnology. 

The future of Biology involves solving complex problems that require broad knowledge. The Molecular & Integrative Biology program at UND emphasizes knowledge that spans across levels of biological organization, from the gene and cell, to the development and physiology of organisms, all the way up to species interacting in their environments.

• Students in the program are encouraged to gain the computational skills needed to analyze complex biological systems and datasets, learn about cutting edge genomic and molecular tools, and put that learning to practice.

The Medical and Biological Illustration (MBI) program offers a robust curriculum designed to prepare future leaders in the medical illustration profession. Accredited since 1970, the MBI program offers courses in visual communication of medicine and life-sciences as well as graduate level science courses in the School of Medicine. Courses are directly related to technical, biological, or medical subject matter. Student assignments require problem solving and individual research. Complete understanding of the topic is required. Expertise in all media communication utilized by clinicians, research scientists, health science personnel, students, patients, and the public is stressed. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with courses in premedical sciences, and be able to demonstrate art skills and experience which they obtained through instruction in the fine and applied arts.

Three years of course work followed by an internship

Or a traditional four-year program followed by an internship

The program prepares students for required academic internships with the School of Medical Laboratory Science at North Kansas City Hospital. The program is practical, also preparing students to ultimately pass national certifying examinations.

The BS in Cell and Molecular Biology prepares students for graduate studies or work in biomedical fields. Laboratory experiences include opportunities for students to conduct original research working closely with a faculty mentor. This degree is also appropriate for professional schools including medical, dental, and veterinary schools. Note that some professional/graduate schools require a full year of physics. Students should work closely with their academic advisor to plan their coursework.

As a molecular biology major at ONU, you’ll map genes using fruit flies (as part of an NSF-funded multi-institution course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE)), test the ability of chemicals to mutate DNA, and clone genes. You’ll explore exciting breakthroughs in stem cell technology and microRNA molecules and debate the ethical and social issues involved. 

Large institutions just can’t provide the individualized attention and opportunity you’ll find here. As a freshman, you’ll be in the lab working with real professors – not graduate assistants or lab instructors. Throughout your four years, you’ll design and conduct your own experiments, work on independent projects, and assist professors with grant-funded research. Most molecular biology students present their research at regional and national conferences. 

The field of genomics is transforming the field of biology and making an impact in the fields of oncology, pharmacology, and infectious disease. Together with molecular genetics (a branch of genetics that studies the structure and activity of genetic material at the molecular level), scientists are discovering the DNA blueprints of organisms and how their construction, regulation, and mutation contributes to human diseases.

Experts in the field of genomics and molecular genetics not only scrutinize the functioning and composition of a single gene, but also understand the interrelationships of genes to identify their combined influence on the growth and development of the organism. Students in the genomics and molecular genetics degree program at Florida Tech explore this scientific relationship, developing the knowledge to solve real-world problems like antibiotic-resistant bacteria and curing cancer.

The science and pre-veterinary medical concentration is specifically designed for students interested in graduate school, professional training, or technical positions after the undergraduate degree. It is intended to satisfy most entrance requirements to post-graduate programs and emphasizes basic science courses. The concentration enables a student to complete all of the pre-veterinary science requirements while working towards a B.S. degree.

Medical technology (MEDT) is a health-care profession in which medical technologists (medical laboratory scientists) perform laboratory procedures used for the promotion of health and the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of diseases. Technical skills needed to carry out the tasks include microscopy, venipuncture, manipulation of various labware and operation of automated instruments. Results of these procedures are essential to the delivery of quality health care. The field is broad and involves several disciplines: chemistry, hematology, immunohematology (blood banking), immunology, and microbiology.
