Cultural Science in Canada

Discover some of the roots of the modern world by examining the development of culture and thought from Graeco-Roman antiquity through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. Explore, understand and appreciate ancient languages and the literature, art, ideas, and historical movements that informed Western civilizations.

In this interdisciplinary program you’ll engage with theory that transcends disciplinary boundaries. You’ll address key issues across the fields of culture, society, and politics.

This competitive program is open to MA and PhD students in select Social Sciences and Humanities. The MA option can be completed in two years. The PhD option can be completed in four years.

The Department of Religion, founded in 1968, introduced its M.A. program in 1976 and its Ph.D. program in 1993. The M.A. is offered as a Joint Program in cooperation with the Department of Religion & Culture at the University of Winnipeg. Our Ph.D. program is offered solely by the University of Manitoba. The department also offers a Pre-Master's program. Applications to our Pre-MA will be considered from those individuals who have obtained a B.A. or B.A. Honours with a strong background in Religion who require additional study to bring their background up to the level necessary for admission to our Joint Masters Program.

These highly successful programs have graduated students in Biblical studies, history of Christianity, world religions, women and religion, hermeneutics and other religion and culture fields. Research interests of the department include: world religions; Bible, Christian Origins, religions and cultures of Western antiquity; medieval, early modern and modern Christianity; Christianity and culture; Buddhism; Hinduism; Judaism and Islam; religion in Canada; ethics; body history; critical theory. Our faculty members have a rich variety of backgrounds and a great wealth of scholarship. Some are internationally recognized leaders in their respective fields.

Department programs are supported by substantial library holdings. Required research languages are offered either through the Department or through affiliated units. The department has a computer lab/meeting room for both faculty and student use.

What can you do with a degree in Religion?

The study of Religion will provide a definite asset for those careers which are people-oriented such as, teaching, social work, government and the Foreign Service. Foreign correspondents of newspapers, radio and TV stations will find such a study of great value. Careers in publishing and the academic field are also available.
 

Explore media and popular cultures, global cultural studies, and critical and cultural theory through courses in internet culture, film and television, activism, globalization, human rights, and more. You'll graduate with the knowledge and skills required for a wide variety of professions.

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies offers Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Our graduate programs produce specialists working in the specialization disciplines of Applied Linguistics, Media and Cultural Studies, Translation Studies and Transnational and Comparative Literatures.

The Master of Arts in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) program provides students with training in the skills, methods, and theoretical backgrounds necessary for work as professional archaeologists within the cultural resource management industry in Alberta and elsewhere. Graduates of this major will also​ be prepared to run their own companies and projects.
