This program prepares a graduate to become a professional leader, supervisor and/or administrator within the private for profit, private nonprofit, and the public sectors of the recreation and leisure services field. The program includes preparation for youth programs, community education, municipal and leisure service programs; a broad variety of therapeutic recreation settings including hospitals, long-term care, advocacy organizations, consultant services; a wide variety of commercial recreation and tourism settings, nature and historical interpretation; private and public park systems including park ranger, research, educational outreach, planning, marketing, park operations; and military recreation. The Department offers a professional core that is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions (COAPRT) with four career tracks: Leisure Planning and Management, Therapeutic Recreation, Resource Management, and Leisure Behavior. 

Outdoor recreation is one of the world’s most diverse and fastest -growing industries. It is often intertwined within another worldwide growth industry, tourism.

The Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) program and its concentrations are designed to provide students with training that will qualify them to work in a variety of work settings such as parks and protected natural areas, the public and private tourism sectors, nonprofit environmental organizations, conservation law enforcement agencies, as well as state and federal natural resource agencies. The PRT program emphasis on the integration of natural, social, and management sciences reflecting the interdisciplinary context in which recreation, tourism, natural resource planning, and environmental concerns are addressed.

The Bachelor of Science in Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration helps students develop knowledge and skills appropriate for employment in leisure services. To accommodate a variety of interests and career directions, the department helps students develop individualized programs of study and requires a professional internship. Students have the opportunity to participate in the Environmental Conservation Outdoor Education Expedition (ECOEE), a semester-long experience conducted in national parks, outdoor education centers, and wilderness areas. Students may also participate in Study Abroad experiences offered by the department each year. Recent graduates are employed in management, planning, and program leadership and development by a variety of organizations including resorts, destination management organizations, park districts, state and national parks, non-profit agencies, camps and outdoor recreation centers, tourism agencies, wilderness camping programs, university student unions, hospitals, and civic and senior citizen centers.

The BA in Tourism Management and Policy will imbue its graduates with the facility to assist others—municipal, state, and federal officials, planners, financial institutions, owners and general managers of accommodations and attractions, consultants, and chambers of commerce—in determining the role of tourism in accomplishing their respective purposes, thereby bringing greater efficiency to large and small tourism and hospitality ventures. Graduates will:

Endicott’s events management program is an interdisciplinary program combining business management coursework with core courses in the field of Event Management. This program explores the dynamic nature of the events industry, whether you want to be a planner or supplier, preparing you to be a leader in the industry.  

As an aspiring event professional, you will learn to create, design, market, execute, and evaluate events of all sizes and types. You will develop the knowledge and skills to ensure their success. Qualified event planners are in demand by a broad scope of organizations and corporations that require management specialization to oversee every facet of events in a proactive and skilled manner.

The Bachelor of Science in Park, Recreation, and Tourism Studies with a concentration in Tourism Management prepares students for careers as professionals working in the hospitality, travel and tourism industry, as well as festival and event planning. Students have the opportunity to take several American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute courses in which they can take earn a certificate upon successful completion of a final exam.

This emphasis focuses on strategic issues related to the tourism and transportation industries. Students can take a combination of tourism and transportation related courses or choose courses that focus on one of these two areas. Tourism management courses cover destination management; travel distribution systems; marketing and management principles within specific types of businesses, geography, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism; and sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, and destination management by cultural values. In transportation management courses, students will gain an understanding of the characteristics and importance of transportation systems (both domestic and international); major transportation modes; government, promotional, and regulatory activities in U.S. transportation; the role of transportation in tourism; the transportation systems that impact the economics of both Hawai‘i and the U.S.; supply chain management; and the management of firms in various transportation modes. Course topics include government regulation and promotion, distribution and industry trends; tourist-related transportation systems, surface passenger transportation systems, and air transportation and the cruise business.
