The green and open spaces in our modern world are treasured. Not just for their aesthetic, but for the balance they bring to the experience of place. They create natural habitats for flora and fauna. They shade hot city streets and create pleasant micro climates. They connect us with the natural environment and ground us in place. This is why landscape architecture is such an important part of planning and designing for a resilient and healthy future. 

This course educates landscape architects to have an in-depth understanding of ecology and habitat creation. If you are interested in biology and the natural world, you will enjoy the focus of this course.

You’ll learn about ecological processes and the impact that design proposals have on habitat. In a world facing a climate crisis, this course will give you specialist training to protect and restore existing habitats and create new places in which nature thrives.

Graduates of this course wishing to pursue Chartership must complete an independent year in practice, followed by a Masters in Professional Landscape Architecture.

The BSLA program offers students the opportunity to engage with the community in applied projects that focus on designing sustainable outdoor environments and improving the ecological and social health of the urban environment.

Undergraduate landscape architecture projects can range from large-scale work encompassing urban design, landscape restoration, open space preservation planning, community planning and landscape ecological design to projects at the more intimate scale of a neighborhood park or residential backyard. Emerging areas of focus include creative placemaking; environmental equity, green roofs and living walls; restorative environments; sustainable design; and urban climate design. Students complement their design learning with electives from a broad range of approved courses.

Completion of the Bachelor of Science in landscape architecture ensures graduates have the qualifications to take the Landscape Architect in Training examination leading to registration as a professional landscape architect. As the only undergraduate degree offered at The Design School which leads directly to professional registration and as an entry point to the profession, above average or higher performance is required for success.

Students selecting landscape contracting and management are prepared to direct  in “hands-on” fashion, the technical side of landscape construction and plant installation. Graduates of this program often operate a landscape contracting business, a design/build company or a landscape management firm, or they may work as a grounds manager.

You will learn to integrate the biological, physical, and social sciences; humanities; arts; and technology to develop the skills that will help you play an important role in creating a more inclusive and sustainable future.

The major provides students opportunities to specialize in several directions: Culture, Health and Community; Restoration and Ecological Design; and Urban Studies. The major also provides students opportunities to explore the design and planning professions. Students who graduate from the major are prepared for starting positions in public or private agencies that oversee conservation, land management, cultural landscape conservation, and planning or for continuing on to graduate school, in particular, professionally accredited programs in Landscape Architecture, Planning, or Environmental Studies. This is the major for people who care about the natural world and human creation by understanding cultural and natural resource protection, green infrastructure, social equity, and policy, and more. 

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture is a four-year nationally accredited professional degree program. The program is generalist, meaning it covers the major areas of practice and building from design basics to the advanced design studio experience, such as large-scale landscape planning; parks, recreation and open space planning; and regional, urban and community design. Clemson's program is noted for its special emphasis on the art and science of design. For that reason, the landscape architecture design studio experience is at the center of the program - 42 hours of studio are required. Studio experience is supported by other courses inside and outside the landscape architecture curriculum that provide grounding in landscape history; horticulture; social, cultural and environmental issues; as well as aesthetics.

Students may also choose to focus elective credits on one of three emphasis areas:

• Cultural issues
• Environmental issues
• Professional development

The program's location in Lee Hall gives students the important opportunity to interact with faculty and other students in the allied areas of city and regional planning, real estate development, architecture, and construction science and management.

Landscape architecture is an environmental design discipline. Landscape architects actively shape the human environment: they map, interpret, imagine, draw, build, conceptualize, synthesize, and project ideas that transform landscapes. The design process involves creative expression that derives from an understanding of the context of site (or landscape) ecosystems, cultural frameworks, functional systems, and social dynamics. Students in our program learn to change the world around them by re-imagining and re-shaping the landscape to enhance its aesthetic and functional dimensions, ecological health, cultural significance, and social relevance. The profession addresses a broad range of landscapes in urban, suburban, rural, and wilderness settings. The scale of landscape architecture projects varies from broad, regional landscape analysis and planning to detailed, individual site-scale designs. The curriculum at Iowa State prepares students for this challenge as they develop their abilities to design and communicate ideas through a sequence of foundational courses and studios. The program seeks to produce graduates who understand the ethical, social, and environmental/ecological dimensions of issues involving changes in the landscape.

The landscape architecture program vision is to advance the discipline of landscape architecture through innovative learning, research, and service activities. First professional B.L.A. and M.L.A. degrees are accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board. Student learning outcomes are coordinated through the curriculum and in each semester to develop creative leaders ready for professional licensure and practice in the public or private sector.

The program specializes in semi-arid landscapes, while engaging design and planning issues critical to a sustainable, resilient, adaptable earth and its growing urban populations. Students are off campus the spring and summer of the third year on extended internship (January through August), or a combination of study abroad and a three-month internship.

Students should note the curriculum is sequential and LARC courses must be taken in order as outlined in the recommended curriculum. Failure to earn a C or better in LARC courses will delay graduation for a full year and prevent students from moving to the next level of courses. Transfer students will likely require two summer sessions and three full years to achieve all course work required for an accredited degree leading toward licensure.

Landscape Architecture is the design of all spaces beyond buildings. Our program will teach you about the specialties of this profession and how to succeed as the scope of the field continues to grow. With this major, you will study Landscape Architecture from two perspectives. Through one lens, you’ll explore the impact of human activity on the environment. Through another, you’ll study the influence of natural and historic factors on settlements, behavior, and well-being.
 

Landscape architecture is a challenging field that offers many diverse career paths. Landscape architects analyze, plan, design, manage, and nurture the built and natural environments. Landscape architects have a significant impact on communities and quality of life, designing parks, campuses, streetscapes, trails, plazas, and other projects that help define a community. Cultural and scientific knowledge is applied to the use and arrangement of natural and man-made elements with concern for resource conservation, stewardship, and the environment. Graduates work in a wide variety of areas in the industry, as designers and planners in public and private practice, and as environmental designers and managers.

The profession of landscape architecture embodies both the art and science of design, planning, and management of the land and the natural and man-made elements upon it. The program embraces creative, cultural, philosophical, and scientific knowledge bases as part of the educational requirements for a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture professional degree. The diverse curriculum is designed to prepare students for entry into the profession or graduate studies. The program’s educational, community outreach and research efforts are guided by concern for the complex interdependence of the biophysical and cultural landscapes and are focused on the challenges that face the Intermountain West. These challenges include: explosive urban growth accompanied by struggling small towns and rural areas; boom and bust cycles in the mining, ranching, and forestry industries; large federal land ownership; critical shortage of water; environmental degradation; and increased demands for recreational environments.

Landscape architecture in the State of Nevada is defined by the arid landscape, importance of tourism, gaming and related activities, and a fundamentally pragmatic approach to solving problems.  The Department of Landscape Architecture and Planning at the University of Nevada Las Vegas is located in a dynamic metropolitan context that integrates unique urban design and significant natural resource challenges.

The professional curriculum prepares students for areas of practice in landscape architecture and planning including site design, urban design, master planning, community planning, regional planning, and natural resource conservation. Graduates of the program are actively engaged in the design and planning of residential communities, institutional complexes, commercial developments, park and recreational lands and facilities, industrial parks, urban spaces, regional and rural districts, and the preservation and restoration of both historic and natural environments.

Course sequences offered within this context include design studios, ecology, plant materials, planting design theory, landscape technologies/construction, landscape media, history, literature, climate, and professional practice, thereby providing students with opportunities to develop critical and creative abilities with a broad environmental perspective.

Landscape architecture is the art of design, planning, and arranging natural and man-made elements on the land.  It applies cultural and scientific knowledge with concern for the conservation and stewardship of natural and aesthetic amenities to create an environment that serves a useful and enjoyable purpose.  This involves consideration of the quality of life in urban and natural settings, as well as the interaction of humans with nature.  The landscape architecture program at West Virginia University strives to equip students with techniques and skills through problem-solving in design theory, site construction, land use planning, and planting design.  It emphasizes a philosophy of responsibility and commitment to ethical standards regarding the natural environment, personal relationships, and professional practice.

The faculty represents a multi-disciplinary team with practical experience in creative and scientific research, design, consultation, and public service. This diversity is the nucleus of the program, allowing for a strong undergraduate curriculum supplemented by related courses in the arts, sciences, engineering, and planning, reflecting the needs of the Appalachian region and current trends within the profession.

Graduates of the program can assume traditional landscape architectural roles, e.g., positions with design consulting firms, governmental planning departments, construction firms, transportation planning agencies, etc.  In addition, WVU graduates are prepared for design and planning positions meeting the needs common to West Virginia and other rural areas.

The landscape architecture program is fully accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board of the American Society of Landscape Architects.  To graduate students must complete a minimum of 120 total credits.  Students will typically complete more than the 120 total credit minimum.

Landscape architects are instrumental in the design of healthy and equitable cities and environments. We consider impacts on the environment from climate change and natural disasters as well as the health of humans and wildlife alike. We design parks, gardens, streetscapes, and restore habitats — while architects are designing buildings and landscape architects design everything else!
