The BS in community and regional planning curriculum is 48 hours, including core courses, an area of emphasis (community planning or coastal planning), and electives. Students will choose either a minor or two concentration areas, and students are also encouraged to complete an internship.

Planners work at every scale: internationally, nationally, at the multistate level, at the state level, and for multicounty regions and localities (counties, cities and special districts). Planning is the study of land use, resources, facilities, and services, as well as the physical, economic, and social well-being of communities. Planners help decide what gets built and where, from roads and transit to parks and housing developments.

The BSc Specialization program takes a scientific approach to planning, with a focus on elements such as environmental management and the use of geographic information sciences.

Prepare to lead community-based planning and development for sustainable, economically healthy communities. The major develops students for careers in planning agencies where they can attain positions as city managers and community planners at the city, county, state or regional level. The program also qualifies graduates to hold positions in organizations such as housing agencies, community and neighborhood development corporations, economic development agencies, federal agencies and private development firms and foundations.

The typical plan of study requires enrollment in a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per term to remain full-time. Not every course is offered every term, and the following plan of study is an illustration. At the initial conference with an advisor, a preliminary plan of study will be established, and this will be reported to the School of Graduate Studies (using the SGS Plan of Study Form) after matriculation as a graduate student for placement in the student’s official file. At this time, any anticipated exceptions or anticipated transfer credits will be noted. An estimated time for completion of the Master’s Project or Thesis must be included. Changes to the plan of study will be reported to the School of Graduate Studies. The student and the advisor will sign the form submitted to the School of Graduate Studies.

The major in real estate prepares students for the graduate-level study of real estate, economics and finance, as well as careers in land development, brokerage, valuation and investment counseling, site analysis and selection, real property management, mortgage lending, and bank trust and corporate real estate departments, in addition to other real estate-related careers in the public and private sectors.
