Youth work has been described as ‘the science of enabling young people to believe in themselves and build positive futures’ (National Youth Agency).

Working with people primarily aged between 11 and 25 is both a challenging and rewarding career choice and the professionals specialising in this field aim to support a young person to develop both personally and socially.

On this course, you’ll cover the history and development of youth and community work, explore the self, groups and learning, society and social policy, and develop your understanding of social science.

You’ll also be looking at oppression, globalisation, how agencies work together, and community development and management, as well as enhancing your research, practical and managerial skills.

Compulsory work placements in youth and community centres, and schools and voluntary organisations, provide ample opportunity to achieve hands-on experience working alongside professional youth and community workers. And you’ll see, first-hand, some of the issues that can affect young people and their communities.

The mission of the UTRGV Mexican American Studies (MASC) program is to prepare students to critically investigate community knowledge and socio-political, economic, cultural, and artistic conditions of and contributions by Mexican Americans, Chicana/ os and Latina/ os to the history, culture, and institutions of the United States and broader Americas. The Mexican American Studies program offers a Bachelors of Arts in Mexican American Studies, a Minor in Mexican American Studies, a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in Mexican American Studies, and a Graduate Certificate.

The undergraduate program in Asian Studies is designated for: (1) general education students who wish to learn more about the peoples and civilizations of this vital area; (2) students who wish to pursue graduate work in this field; and (3) students who seek employment in or relating to Asia. Instead of specializing in one academic discipline, Asian Studies majors become acquainted with different disciplines and apply them directly to one area. As this program is interdivisional in nature, students take courses in anthropology, art, economics, geography, history, humanities, languages, music, philosophy, political science, religion, and sociology. An Asian Studies major with an emphasis in Business has been developed. It is designed to provide undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to acquire knowledge in Asian Studies and receive a degree with a business emphasis.
