In Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, UTS is a public research institution, especially since its supposed roots date to the 1830s.The School established the Workingman's College in the 1870s, and the NSW government later took control of it to establish the Sydney Technical College in 1882. In 1985, the Haymarket campus was formally inaugurated as UTS after the New South Wales Institute of Technology was founded in 1964 as a result of an Act passed by the NSW Parliament in 1940 to establish an institute of technology (NSWIT). The NSW Institute of Technology and the NSW Institute of Business Studies merged in 1968. The first law school outside of a university was founded by NSWIT in 1976 just before the official inauguration in 1985. The Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, founded in 1833; is the oldest continuously operating Mechanics' Institute in Australia, and is where the UTS got its start.
