The Asia University Rankings 2022 Out

The Times Higher Education (THE) has released the Asia University Rankings 2022, listing the top educational institutions across the continent. As per the results, for the third consecutive year, Tsinghua University (1), Peking University (2), the National University of Singapore (3), and The University of Hong Kong (4) emerged as the top four performers. 

The global education ranking agency evaluated performance data on 616 universities from 31 countries and territories for this year’s results. 

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, The University of Tokyo, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong retained their 5th, 6th, and 7th positions, respectively, this year from the last year. 

THE factors in 13 parameters, including research citation, faculty-student ratio, internationalization of campuses, teaching, and industry connection, among several others, while preparing these rankings.

The top 5 universities that ranked high in the research were Tsinghua University (with a score of 95.6), Peking University (95), National University of Singapore (91.3), and The University of Tokyo (88.7), and Seoul National University (77.6). 

India, on the other hand, emerged as the third most-represented country, with a total of 71 Indian universities finding a place on the list, up from 63 last year. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, featured in the 42nd spot on the list. The Mysore-based JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (65), IIT Ropar (=68), and IIT Indore (=87) joined IISc in the top 100. 

Seventeen Indian universities made it to the top 200. Some of them are IIT Gandhinagar, Alagappa University, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Saveetha University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Delhi Technological University, Banaras Hindu University, Institute of Chemical Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi and Panjab University.

Saudi Arabian universities showed fast improvement, with six of them among the top 100 and four in the top 50 this year, double the number in 2021. For the seventh year in a row, Japan emerged as the most-represented nation, with 118 universities on the list.  

In a statement, Chief Knowledge Officer of THE, Phil Baty, said: “This new dataset shows the extraordinarily diverse range of excellence across the Asian continent – with 31 Asian nations/regions making a list. The data demonstrate that Asia is perhaps the most exciting and most dynamic continent for higher education, research and innovation in the world today.”
