Anyone with an interest in subsurface energy, including fossil fuels, CO2 sequestration, and geothermal energy, should consider the possibility of a career as a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers seek out oil and natural gas reservoirs beneath the earth's surface, design subsurface carbon capture projects, and are frequently involved in deep geothermal energy projects. They develop the safest and most environmentally friendly methods of bringing these energy resources to the market.

Many petroleum engineers travel the world or live in foreign countries - wherever their explorations take them to find and recover valuable petroleum reserves. These travels can lead to the deserts, high seas, mountains, and arctic regions of the world in order to find untapped sources of energy for the world's population. Petroleum engineers also tend to quickly assume leadership roles, handling large projects with high levels of responsibility.

Because of the increasing demand for types of energy and carbon management beyond fossil fuels, there has been an accompanying increase in the demand for petroleum engineers in areas such as CO2 sequestration and geothermal energy.

As a petroleum engineering student, you will study the technology of oil and gas drilling, production, reserves estimation, and the prediction of future production. You will also study various techniques for evaluating the characteristics of subsurface formations and their fluid contents, which is crucial for all subsurface energy operations.

Petroleum Engineering is more than just oil and gas: in addition to energy, petroleum-based products such as plastics are key components of virtually every consumer product and medical device we use.

Petroleum engineers apply scientific understanding and technology in the extraction and management of hydrocarbon resources while also exploring ways to preserve and protect the environment.

For the past five decades, the University of Alberta has offered the only accredited BSc Petroleum Engineering degree program in Canada. Situated in Canada's primary oil and natural-gas producing region, we offer our students a distinct advantage by providing numerous research opportunities within the petroleum industry.

Co-op option
This degree can be taken as a Co-op (co-operative education) program. Through the Co-op program, you will have the opportunity to complete paid, supervised work terms throughout your degree. Co-op programs are great way to challenge yourself, gain relevant work experience, and make connections to industry before you graduate!

Most co-op programs include five work terms lasting four months each, in addition to the usual eight terms (four years) of full-time study. Therefore, co-op programs require five years to complete.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering is concerned with design and application aspects of the discovery, production, and transportation of oil and natural gas resources.

Professionals in this field must have a thorough understanding of the geological principles relating to the occurrence, discovery, and production of fluid hydrocarbons.  The petroleum and natural gas engineer must know and be capable of applying both conventional engineering design principles as well as those pertaining specifically to the field of petroleum and natural gas engineering.  These are developed in the petroleum and natural gas engineering courses in the curriculum.  In addition, a strong foundation in mathematics and the sciences broadens the future engineer’s professional capabilities.  Because many engineers will be employed as supervisors or executives, managerial and social skills are also emphasized.

Petroleum engineers combine fundamentals of science & math with computer programming, materials science, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics to develop and apply new technology to recover hydrocarbons from conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
