Located in Cardiff, Wales, Cardiff University (Welsh: Prifysgol Caerdydd) is a public research institution. Originally called the University institution of South Wales and Monmouthshire, it was founded in 1883 and joined the University of Wales as a foundation institution in 1893. The University of Wales College, Cardiff (University of Wales, Cardiff, from 1996) was formed in 1988 following its merger with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST). Degree-granting authority was granted to it in 1997, but it was kept in limbo. In 1999, it took on the operating name Cardiff University, which it changed to its legal name in 2005 when it became an autonomous university capable of conferring degrees on its own.
