This Zoology MBiol Honours degree focuses on developing your scientific knowledge and provides a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of zoology. This ensures you graduate prepared for a role in this varied field.

Through laboratory and field-based teaching, you'll learn and perfect the skills required to succeed in zoology. In your fourth year you'll work alongside our active research staff to delve deeper into more advanced topics.

Our zoology degree shares its first-year programme with other biology degrees in the School and ensures you gain a thorough understanding across a range of topics. You'll select from modules such as: ecology and conservation, genetics and evolution, diversity of life: form and function.

This five-year course is designed to give you the best start for a career in industrial or academic research. You'll combine the research-focused integrated masters with a year-long, paid work placement as part of your degree. 

Our students have found placements within industry with organisations such as GSK, Atkins Environmental Consulting and EMEC Ecology; with charities like the Wildlife Trusts, Newquay Zoo, and the Field Studies Council; or in government with the Environment Agency. You could even apply your scientific knowledge and transferable skills within or outside of the bioscience industry in areas including market research, communications or business development. It's a great opportunity to test out a career path that you're considering and many students are offered a graduate-level job at the end. You'll pay reduced fees for the year you're on placement and you'll still have the support you need from your tutor and the University.

The study of zoology is an exploration of how animals have evolved, how they function, and the ways in which they interact with their environment. This programme provides students with the opportunity to conduct research on animal anatomy, physiology, behaviour, ecology, evolution, and conservation, to help us better understand the amazing diversity of animal life on Earth.

Zoology is the study of animals, how they behave, evolve and influence the world around them. Our friendly faculty are experts in the behaviour, conservation and evolution of animals – from white sharks and spider monkeys to bees and cuttlefish – and will inspire your passion for the subject.

At Sussex, you’ll experience Zoology first-hand. The University is the perfect place to study British wildlife – the South Downs National Park and the coast are on our doorstep. You’ll have the opportunity to go on an exciting range of local, national and international field trips.

During your integrated Masters year, you’ll develop advanced research skills by working with a Zoology research group. This experience will equip you for a future in scientific research. The Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology offer graduate study leading to the non-thesis Master of Wildlife Conservation in Wildlife Conservation program. A broad range of ecosystems, modern laboratory facilities, and a diversified staff provide excellent opportunities for graduate study in wildlife ecology.

• Emphasis is placed on detailed studies of wildlife species and the habitats in which they live.
• Research may be conducted in such areas as terrestrial and aquatic ecology, fisheries, physiology, behavior, population dynamics, resource management, and the influence of environmental disturbances.
  • The department is home to federal biologists with the U.S. Geological Survey, Maine Cooperative Fisheries and Wildlife Research Unit; these scientists have faculty appointments and advise graduate students.

The Department of Zoology is internationally renowned for its research in a variety of modern biological sciences including ecology, evolution, physiology, cell biology, and developmental biology. The department has many strong interdisciplinary connections between the different areas of research.

The Department of Entomology offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The program is designed to accommodate incoming students with a wide range of entomological expertise. The goal of the program is to provide students with a strong background in basic biology as it relates to insects and to equip them with the specialized intellectual and technical skills to pursue a career in research, teaching, and service in entomology and related biological disciplines.

Major areas of specialization within the department include systematics, evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, genomics, chemical ecology, disease ecology, invasion biology, toxicology, pollinator health, social insect biology, insect-microbe interactions, conservation biology, and integrated pest management.
