The English Language and Literature course at Oxford is one of the broadest in the country, giving you the chance to study writing in English from its origins in Anglo-Saxon England to the present. As well as British literature, you can study works written in English from other parts of the world, and some originally written in other languages, allowing you to think about literature in English in multilingual and global contexts across time. The course allows you a considerable degree of choice, both in developing your personal interests across core papers, and in choosing a topic for your dissertation and for a special option in your final year. Options have included Literature and revolution, Postcolonial literature, Writing lives, Old Norse, Tragedy, and Film criticism.

Studying literature at Oxford involves the development of sophisticated reading skills and of an ability to place literary texts in their wider intellectual and historical contexts. It also requires you to consider the critical processes by which you analyse and judge, to learn about literary form and technique, to evaluate various approaches to literary criticism and theory, and to study the development of the English language.

From the history and culture of Anglo-Saxon England, and Celtic languages to Viking exploits, Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic (ASNC) allows you to explore a range of cultures, and to look at history, language and literature side by side.

ASNC focuses on the history, material culture, languages and literature of the peoples of Britain, Ireland and the Scandinavian world in the earlier Middle Ages.

ASNC students discover medieval history while learning one or more languages and reading great works of literature in the original languages, such as the Old English poem Beowulf, the epic medieval Irish tale Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley) and Icelandic sagas. This degree is designed to give you a solid foundation in linguistic theory, and to link this theory to the huge array of real-life contexts in which language is used. Our mix of core and optional modules means that you will have the freedom to design the course that suits you, building on the topics that most capture your imagination.

In your first year, you take modules that encompass the fundamentals of linguistic research: linguistic theory, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and research methodology. Our modules focusing on linguistic theory and the structure and sounds of English will allow you to learn about how language actually works and how linguists study it. You'll then apply this knowledge to modules that examine the history and varieties of English, teaching you about how language varies in space and time.

The Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program is one of the major US centers for research about Latin America. This program is for those who seek a multidisciplinary education on Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal. It offers a wide range of courses in fields such as anthropology, business, economics, geography, history, journalism, music, political science, sociology, Spanish and Portuguese, and indigenous languages such as Yucatec Maya or Quechua.

Latin American & Caribbean Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to give you a broad understanding Latin America and Caribbean people, societies, cultures, histories, artistic expressions, and diasporic movements. As a LACS major or minor, you will gain extensive knowledge of this vibrant and important world area from a range of disciplinary perspectives including Anthropology, Black Studies, Communications, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Language, Literatures and Cultures, Political Science, Sociology, Theater Arts, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies. The study of language and literature deepens self-understanding, opens up the broad diversity of human viewpoints and cultures, hones writing and thinking skills, and intensifies the appreciation of the arts of literature and writing. It develops the mind as it teaches skills in critical thinking, research, and communication valued in a wide variety of careers.

The Department of English at Eastern Illinois University offers five areas of emphasis to choose from: 1) Literary & Cultural Studies, 2) Professional Writing, 3) Creative Writing, 4) English Language Arts (teacher certification), and 5) English Studies (a very flexible choice for students who desire a more self-directed, but mentored program). We also offer minors in Literary & Cultural Studies, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, and English Language Arts (that last one is for those students with a major in another area of teacher education).

The department offers majors in English (Literature and Language) and English Education. Students in both options can take a variety of courses in areas reflecting the major approaches that define the study of language and literature today. The study of Forms provides students precise language and concepts to understand how the structures of literature inform its meaning. The study of Traditions emphasizes the historical development of literature, particularly in terms of British and American literatures. Language and Theory courses give students the tools to precisely understand language and reflect on how texts come to have meaning in a variety of discourses, cultural contexts, and philosophical perspectives. Social Justice courses encourage students to explore how literary studies address issues of cultural power and politics. Examples would include the role of literature in responding to racism, gender identities, class conflict, and disability. In addition, all majors take a professional development course and a capstone seminar. English Education majors take courses in the teaching of language, literature, and writing. 

The Department of English offers separate undergraduate and graduate programs, each designed to suit the needs of its particular student body. The undergraduate program, in the context of university requirements and elective courses, provides the basis for a liberal education and prepares students for graduate work or professional schools, such as medicine and law, as well as professional teaching and literary scholarship. The graduate program prepares advanced students for professional teaching careers in English literature.

This Majors Abroad Program (MAP) has an interdisciplinary focus on politics, history, international relations, and French language and culture.

The Major in French and Francophone Studies strongly encourages the student to spend one or two semesters abroad in France, at Hollins University in Paris. Our literature courses seek to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of the unique value of literary expression as an aesthetic form that challenges the senses, the intellect, and the imagination. Students also learn to appreciate the complex relationship between the aesthetic and intellectual aspects of literature and the culture and time in which it was produced.

The mission of the professional education unit is to prepare candidates who attain educational achievement through collaboration and reflection. To that end the professional education unit (including content departments), collaborates with K-12 schools, Educational Service Cooperatives, Educational Renewal Zones and other local, state, and national organizations to inculcate high standards of educational achievement for all students. The Unit engages pre-service and in-service teachers, administrators, counselors and other educators to excel in teaching, leadership, scholarship and service.

The primary goal of the BA in World Languages and Cultures at Georgia College is to provide students with a solid liberal arts education that becomes the foundation for personal and professional growth over a lifetime. The German program at the University of Mount Union provides students with a unique opportunity to learn the language, history, literature, and culture of the German-speaking world. Students learn to communicate effectively in the language and to prepare themselves for careers in teaching, business, international relations, and the STEM fields.
