In 1832, an Act of Parliament established Durham University (officially named the University of Durham), a college public research university located in Durham, England. It was incorporated by royal charter in 1837. According to accepted historical procedure, it is the third-oldest university in England because it was the first institution of higher learning to be established in the country for over 600 years, after Oxford and Cambridge. The academic departments of the university and its 17 colleges share primary responsibilities as a collegiate institution. The colleges are in charge of the students' housing and care, whereas the departments often carry out research and instruct the learners.
