In Providence, Rhode Island, Brown University is a private Ivy League research university. It was established as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1764, making it the seventh-oldest higher education institution in the US.

The main campus of Brown University is located in Providence, Rhode Island's College Hill district. A district of architecture that has been federally listed and contains a significant number of structures from the colonial era surrounds the university. One of the richest concentrations of 17th and 18th century architecture in America is found on Benefit Street, which runs along the western perimeter of the campus. Brown's undergraduate admissions are some of the most competitive in the nation, with a class of 2026 acceptance rate of 5% overall.
