Situated in Sunderland, North East England, the University of Sunderland is a public research institution. In 1901, Sunderland Technical institution was founded as a municipal training institution, taking its place. In 1992, it was granted university status. It currently has over 27,000 students and campuses in Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong. In addition to the Sunderland campus, there are campuses in Hong Kong and London. The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St. Peter's and City Campus are the Sunderland campuses. 

The Forge U-Student Village, Scotia Quay, Panns Bank, and Clanny House are the four residence halls at the University of Sunderland. The main resident hall, Clanny House, is situated on Hylton Road opposite Sunderland Royal Hospital. Located across the road from The Bonded Warehouse and across the River Wear from St. Peter's Campus, are Scotia Quay and Panns Bank. These halls' current position was once one of the many sites along the river that the former shipbuilding industry utilised. Ashbrooke, All Saints, Clifton, Westfield, Park, and Williamson Halls are among the former residence halls.

The university's five academic departments are in charge of research and development, teaching and learning, and collaborating with business and industry partners.
