Originally founded as Leeds Trinity & All Saints, the college attained full university status in December 2012 after being awarded the authority to issue its own degrees in 2009. In 2009, the college became a university college. The university belongs to both the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and the Cathedrals Group. Trinity College for women and All Saints College for men were the two Roman Catholic teacher training institutions for Yorkshire that Leeds Trinity first began in 1966. Because of the post-war baby boom, there was a huge demand for new teachers in Britain at the time.

Leeds Trinity is a university campus located near the community of Rawdon, near Brownberrie Lane in Horsforth. Leeds's main center is six miles away from the university. The train station at Horsforth is 15 minutes' walk away, and it takes 15 minutes to get to Leeds city center. Leeds Trinity has eight residence halls on campus. Among these is All Saints Court, a £6 million project that debuted in September 2010 and has 198 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and self-catering amenities. Students can access over 500,000 electronic books and 115,000 print volumes at Leeds Trinity's library, which is housed within the Andrew Kean Learning Center. A sizable section of classroom resources is also available to help students with their teaching practice. 24-hour facilities are available.
