Coastal British Columbia and Vancouver Island are served by Vancouver Island University (VIU), a public university in Canada that was previously known as Malaspina University-College and before as Malaspina College. Founded in 1969, Malaspina College has developed into a university that is significant to the regional economy, culture, and educational landscape. In addition to the main campus in Nanaimo, there are regional campuses in Powell River and Duncan, as well as a center in Parksville.

In September 1969, Vancouver Island University opened for enrollment as Malaspina College, taking its name from the island's first exploration by Captain Alessandro Malaspina. Over 600 students registered in the first year, nearly twice as many as were first anticipated.

In order to accommodate its expanding faculty and student body, VIU, which now occupies three campuses and numerous other locations, including a center in Parksville/Qualicum, the Deep Bay Marine Field Station, Milner Gardens, and Woodlands, has undergone numerous renovations and significant developments in recent years. The campuses are:

  • Cowichan Campus (Duncan, British Columbia)
  • Nanaimo Campus
  • tiwšɛmawtxw (Situated in the region of Qathet)
  • Qualicum Center in Parksville

The developed space on the main campus, which is situated in Nanaimo, totals 1,030,000 square feet. The Dr. Ralph Nilson Centre for Health & Science and the new Marine, Automotive, and Trades Complex are the newest buildings on this main campus. They were constructed with financial assistance from the federal, provincial, and local governments.

The University offers degrees in Business, Education, Tourism and Hospitality, Social Sciences, Science and Technology, etc.
