Located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the Université de Montréal, also known as the University of Montreal, is a public research institution that speaks French. The university's main campus is situated in the Outremont borough's Côte-des-Neiges area.

Thirteen faculties, over sixty departments, and two associated schools—the HEC Montréal (school of business) and the Polytechnique Montréal (school of engineering), formerly known as the École Polytechnique de Montréal—make up the university. More than 650 graduate and undergraduate programs, including 71 doctorate programs, are available.

In 1878, the university was established as an outpost of the Université Laval. It received a provincial charter in 1920 and a papal charter in 1919, at which point it became an independent institution.  With the exception of associated schools, the coeducational institution enrolls 11,925 postgraduate students and 34,335 undergraduate students.
