UIDAI stands for Unique Identification Authority Of India. The government wanted a single authority to manage everything related to the unique Aadhar numbers. From this idea, UIDAI was born in July 2006.

  • Back in 2006, the government started the project of issuing Aadhar cards to Indian citizens. 
  • A system was needed to generate unique Aadhar numbers, assign them to new users, and authenticate users' identities. 
  • In 2010, the authority successfully issued its first Aadhar number to a resident of Maharashtra. 
  • UIDAI was affiliated with the Planning Commission or NITI Ayog at that time. Later, in 2015, it was attached to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
  • UIDAI is the authority that manages the entire Aadhar card ecosystem. 
  • The main function of the UIDAI is to issue Aadhar numbers to the holders of Aadhar cards. Aadhar numbers are supposed to be unique, and they are highly sensitive information. Also, there are a lot of significant functions related to the Aadhar card.
  • The system must also detect fake identities duplicate Aadhar cards, and authenticate the user's identity. Plus, it is in charge of enrolment of people under Aadhar and managing all the life cycle stages of an Aadhar card, like updating or correcting it.
  • The authority is responsible for keeping the Aadhar information secure.
  • It is a robust system that keeps citizens' most sensitive data safe. 
  • It has a big role in making Aadhar digitised and easily accessible.
